ALTAMONT, Kan. -- Injuries and suspensions didn't keep the Tigers from striking quickly both early and late in a Southeast Kansas League battle with Labette County at Lucas Field here Friday night.
The Tigers (1-2 SEK, 2-2 overall) scored on their first three possessions in going out to a 20-6 lead. But LCHS fought back to tie the game in the third quarter before Fort Scott exploded for 26 unanswered points in going on to a 46-28 victory.
Fort Scott had to work with a makeshift offensive line due to injuries and suspensions as only two regular starting linemen played.
The Tigers scored just two plays into the contest when Stoughton broke a run over the right side from 65 yards out. Jonathan Karleskint's interception set up the next score, an 18-yard scamper by quarterback Aaron Judy that came at the end of an eight-play, 77-yard drive.
Fort Scott rushed for 141 yards in the first quarter alone, Stoughton for 93 of them.
Labette County, however, always plays the Tigers tough and the Grizzlies answered Fort Scott's second score with their own scoring drive. LCHS drove 60 yards finishing things off with a three-yard plunge by Davy Brown with 1:16 left in the first quarter. The PAT kick failed, so the score remained 12-6 in the Tigers' favor.
Fort Scott answered that score with another one of its own. Judy connected with receiver Brandon Boyd for 34 yards to the Labette County 31 on the first play of the drive. Four plays later, Stoughton scored his second touchdown of the night on an 18-yard run with 11:18 to go in the second quarter.
James Blair, who led LCHS with 114 yards on 20 carries, brought his team within one touchdown with 1:19 left in the half when he scored on a three-yard run over the right side. Quarterback Keaton Turner hit tight end Brannon Green for the two-point conversion.
The Grizzlies tied it at 20-20 on their first possession of the second half when Blair ran outside and found the end zone on a 13-yard play with 8:01 on the clock in the third.
Judy's fumble recovery on a bad LCHS pitch set up the beginning of Fort Scott's scoring explosion. The first six points were scored by backup quarterback Ben Getter as Judy was apparently shaken up on the play before. Gettler, who was faced with a fourth-and-two play, kept the ball down the sideline and scored from 32 yards out to make it 26-20 with 48 seconds left in the third.
The next score was another long run by Stoughton, this one of 57 yards with 10:39 left in the fourth that made it 32-20. Then a long fumble return by Brandon Boyd set up Stoughton's fourth score of the night, a 14-yard jaunt with 10:19 left. Griffin Knopp's extra point made it 39-20.
The defense even got into the act as Gary Floyd intercepted a pass and took it back 48 yards to the house with 9:04 to go to cap the spurt. Knopp again hit the extra point.
Blair posted the game's final score when he went in from two yards out with 3:01 to go. He also ran in the two-point conversion.
Stoughton finished with a career-best 171 yards on just nine carries. This was his fifth 100-yard game, his third of this season. He has rushed for 457 yards and six touchdowns on the season. Judy added 58 yards on seven carries.
Judy -- who later returned to finish the game -- completed five of 11 passes for 86 yards. Floyd caught three passes for 42 yards and Boyd caught two for 40.
The Tigers rained 282 yards on the ground on 27 carries, an average of over 10 yards a rush. The Grizzlies had 275 yards on 50 carries, an average of 5 1/2 yards a run. In total, Fort Scott outgained LCHS, 368-332.
Fort Scott will host Columbus for Homecoming in a Southeast Kansas League battle next Friday night at Frary Field.

no, I am no match for you, Miss Bubba
This is merely a log in name. I happen to be a female who grew up in the community. Big Bubba seems to be a redneck term that you certainly can relate to. No comments about unwed mothers or football this time, Brandon?
the very name "bigbubba" defines "real man" to me
Brandonx1
What a sad story you must have. Bashing young men, unwed mothers and a fine community. Spending hours of your time waiting for a post so that you can argue in a sad attempt to boost your ego is pathetic. I can only imagine you do not live in Fort Scott. I believe you must sit at your computer all day, maybe occasionally doing something other than gaming that you consider productive. Possibly your a sports writer or a graphic designer, maybe you deal in ebay. At any rate, your a sorry little man who should spend more time gaming and less time commenting on the SEK and the fine teams that contribute to the league. Leave the football to real men.
Brandonx1, I see you are still having problems with simple math. Excluding the "71 jaunt" Mitchell Stoughton was still averaging over 12 yards per carry. And, my dear friend, I will give you credit for mentioning the linemen upfront, you are absolutely correct that he didn't do it alone. As most linemen know, in football there is guts and glory, but it all makes up the team. As far as the name calling goes, I must apologize for that, but you continue to give credence to "functional illiterate" with your poor math skills. Concerning the check, if you are an unwed mother, I would be more than glad to send the check directly to you.
ah, now the insults.....tsk, tsk,......did anyone block for the young man or did he do it by his lonesome....should we be harping for those young men (if they were there) to be recognized???...labette is not a good team, sir, so i am not overly impressed......a lot of those yards were needed at pitt......after his 71 yard jaunt what was the YPC then???.....i have forgotten more football than you will know, sir...........make that check out to the unwed mommies at fshs....
Brandonx1, how long have you been following football? I would venture to say that it hasn't been that long. Or, maybe you just happen to be a functional illiterate. Whatever the case may be, let me bring you up to speed on football, especially at the running back position. Most running backs would consider five yards per carry an awesome stat. However, on the night in question, which you, my dear friend, said, was not "above average", he had 171 yards on nine carries. That is an ASTOUNDING average of 19 yards per carry. If you don't think that is above average, please let me know where to send the check as a contribution to your much needed education.
I am so sorry, sir, but it was you lamenting the lack of acknowledgment by the local newspaper for this fine young man........the way you made it sound was that this player was above average, which on this night, he was not.......he may be one of the best 20 or so in the immediate SEK area.......at best.......
Brandonx1, your ability to count is very suspect at best. First, one question does not constitute 20 questions by exactly 19. Second, a team, in this case a football team, consist of more than one individual--that may be why Mitch Stoughton's "team sports two losses". In your response I believe that your math skill alluded you once again, where you thought that Mitch Stoughton was the team.

this is not 20 questions, sir......if he is so outstanding why does the team sport two loses?
Brandonx1, Mitch was his average self, which by most standards is better than everyone elses average--meaning better than "average". A question for you, can you name one running back with a better yard per carry average than Mitch Stoughton? That's your average, sir.
mitch was very average
Congratulations to the Tigers for their short-handed victory. Kudos to Mitch Stoughton on a career night (I was at the game so I knew that it was "Mitch" despite the Tribune never mentioning his first name). As far as the violations, infractions, etc., whatever happened, I am under the "old school" rules, "You do the crime, you do the time". Enough said
btw nice job throwing epps under the bus, williams
what was the infraction?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...Situation supposedly handled a month ago...discipline handed out...homecoming suspensions...then suddenly, after almost a week, it comes to light that the situation was handled a month ago...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Unfortunately here is another example of misinformation. Hopefully, by the end of this week people will know what has truly happened in this situation. As the JV coach of the volleyball team, let me fill you in on the actual events. A month ago, when rumors from this situation surfaced, the head volleyball coach handed out suspensions on her team. Other coaches chose to speak with their players since all of this was based on heresay. The head VB coach followed district policy and handed out punishment IMMEDIATELY when this happened. A month later, students have now been questioned and athletes from other teams have been handed out punishments from their coaches. It is unfortunate that the district does not have one policy followed by all coaches. Carol (the head vb coach), followed district policy. The girls have sat out 3 matches. Is it Carol's fault that Coach Epps has a different policy than the district? I think not.

Congrats to the Tigers for winning after a week of duress. Kudos to the coaching staff for its integrity in handling violations of team rules. Too bad we can't say the same for the volleyball staff.
