Evelyn Boatright Roberts, age 97, a former resident of Kansas City, Mo., and more recently of Prescott, Kan., died Saturday, September 6, 2008, at the Country View Nursing Home in Prescott, Kan. She was born July 15, 1911, in Garland, Kan., the daughter of John W. Boatright and Clara Osborne Boatright. Evelyn attended the Fort Scott High School and was a member of the National Honor Society.
After graduation she taught at the Large School, southwest of Garland and later at the Garland School where she taught primary grades 1-4. She held a record of being the only person to be both a student for eight years and later a teacher for eight years at the same school at Garland. She also taught at Fulton, Kan., one year. World War II interrupted her teaching career when she was employed by the Signal Corps of the Air Force.
After the war, she married Raymond Roberts. When she was a young girl, she joined the Garland Methodist Church. She was interested in Sunday School. There she became a member of the Queen Esther Circle in which she served in several different offices. While living in Kansas City, she was a member of the Wesley Heights United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Wilma Ross, Fredericksburg, Virginia and nine nieces and nephews including Wilma Hibdon, of Fort Scott, who provided for her care. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Walter and Joseph Boatright; two sisters, Catherine Ross Denning and Alma Emrick, two nephews and one niece.
Pastor Greg Stine will conduct graveside services at 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at the Clarksburg Cemetery. Family and friends may meet at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel at 1 p.m., Wednesday, prior to leaving for the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Prescott Country View Nursing Home and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kan. 66701.
