Tiger volleyball 1-2 at Pittsburg

PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball team got an early look at Southeast Kansas League competition as well as a potential Sub-State opponent in a quadrangular here Saturday.

The Tigers (2-3) took a 2-0 win over league rival Columbus with game scores of 25-16 and 25-10. They lost to Pittsburg, another league opponent, 25-10, 25-20, and to non-league Girard, 17-25, 25-16, 25-10.

Girard, the only Class 4A school in the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League, swept the field while Pittsburg also beat Columbus.

In the Tigers' match with Columbus (0-3), which was playing its first matches of the season, setter Brittany Bingesser had 13 assists. Annie Gladbach and Sammi Therwhanger each had six kills while Mallory Shelton had three and Jenna Campbell and Shelby Nafzger had two each.

In the match against Pittsburg (4-2), which has received votes in Class 4A from the Kansas Volleyball Association in its pre-season poll, Bingesser had 11 more assists and Monica Dikeman was credited with 11 digs. Gladbach had seven kills while Shelton and Therwhanger each had three.

Bingesser recorded 10 assists against Girard. Gladbach had eight kills, Therwhanger three and Shelton and Nafzger two each.

The Tigers are back in action Saturday at Erie for a quadrangular that also includes Parsons and Southeast-Cherokee. Play begins at 9 a.m.
