(1908)

Fern Lake Park closes Labor Day, Sept. 7, with a grand picnic and sham battle given by Company G, of the Kansas National Guard.

The Fort Scott Marble and Granite Works of this city has sold more granite and more marble in the past 30 days than in any previous 30-day period for the past year. This speaks well for the management of this old establishment and this is some indication also that the effects of the late money panic are gradually wearing away. The foreman, Mr. Chas. Collins, has been laying in a fine stock of goods in the way of marble and granite markers, tablets and monuments and is just now unloading two cars of fine Carthage stone for base work. Interested parties are invited to personally inspect the stock now on hand at the ware rooms, corner of Third and Main streets.

The maiden baked an angel cake --

An angel cake did the maiden bake.

She baked it all for Willie's sake --

Dear Willie!

And Willie ate it, every crumb --

And then he heard the heavenly drum,

With all the angels calling, 'come!'

And Willie went!

Leola Reinecke and Ethel Hall, of the Northeast Scott 4-H Club, contend that the first angel cakes they made would have had much the same effect on the unfortunate Willie. But due to advanced training in 4-H club work, they were able to win the county demonstration contest last week with their demonstration, "Perfect Angel Cake." The girls will present their demonstration Saturday at the Penniman Hardware Store. The public is cordially invited and the criticisms and advice of Fort Scott's expert angel cake makers will be welcomed.

Fort Scott High School volleyball coach Billie Jo Drake says the Tigers still have a way to go but they should show a marked improvement in their second season of interscholastic competition. The Tigers, 1-13 in their inaugural a year ago, return five lettermen including four full-time starters on a squad of 18. Returning starters are seniors Nanette LaRoche, Debbie White and Janel Coe and junior Karen Colegrove. They likely will be joined in the starting line-up by junior Lisa McKenney and junior letter winner Jolene Hessong.
