Tigers kick off season with JV tourney Monday

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Fort Scott High School's tennis team will begin its season first, hosting a junior varsity tournament Monday, then going to Parsons for a varsity tourney Monday.

At the moment, there are only six players on the squad although two curious girls were looking on to see if they might want to play. Three of the six playing now have varsity experience.

"We have a very inexperienced team," Tiger head coach Lynn Barr said. "It's probably going to be kind of like last year. We'll have the new players play in JV matches to get experience before we put them into varsity matches."

The team's only senior is second-year player Britney Doherty. There are no juniors. Sophomores Lauren Caulfield and Taylor Bailey are the other varsity-experienced players. They are joined by first-year sophomores Kalia Dacy and Kelsie Hess and freshman Sammi Carr. Until those last three get some JV matches under their belts, the Tiger varsity will play its matches short-handed.

"There's one thing that I feel good about," Barr said. "They have time to get better."

Independence, Southeast Kansas League champions each of the last four years (sharing it with Parsons in 2005), should be the favorite to win the league again even though it lost five of its six varsity players and saw its head coach retire.

"Independence...to them it doesn't really matter," Barr said. "And the boys' coach took over the girls' program, so they're not going to miss a beat."

Indy's boys' program has won or shared the SEK title 19 of the last 20 spring seasons.

"After Indy, I'm not sure," Barr said. "I was looking through records. Chanute lost a lot. Columbus had a group of seniors who had been with the program four years, so they lost all of them. Coffeyville still has a good singles player, the Chapman girl. Pittsburg, I think will be better. Parsons should be okay."

The Tiger JV will play at home one other time, on Sept. 15. The Fort Scott varsity team will host an invitational on Oct. 2
