Douglas Watt and friend Don Bassett of Wichita, came to Arcadia to spend from Tuesday to Saturday with Grandmother Mae Watt and Douglas' other Grandparents, the Morrisons of Franklin, Kan. He brought his new Four-wheeler on a trailer behind his truck. Since his birthday comes on August 29, the three celebrated early with a decorated cake by Connie Morris, as he received his card and gift. On that Friday, Douglas' Uncle Tom Watt joined the three for the evening meal and stayed overnight.
The following week, Tom Watt Jr and son Dawson Watt brought carry-in dinner from Long John Silvers and spent Thursday with Mae Watt.
Mary Lee and Jack Payne were guests of their daughter, Amy and Dave Carpenter and children in their home in Bolivar, Mo., where Amy is planning to teach this coming year. Enroute home, the Paynes enjoyed dinner with her sister Velma Jewell at her Assisted Living Home in Ozark, Mo.
Gary and Sharon Smith of Warsaw, Mo., were Thursday overnight guests of his Aunt, Wanda Norris and attended the Arma Homecoming over the weekend. He brought to Arcadia two AHS Year Books that had belonged to his Aunt, Lucille Hubbard who graduated from this school in l937. Those who were in High School during these same years are enjoying the annuals.
The Casey family now of Joplin were known in Arcadia as Phil and Susan Casey, pastors of Arcadia Christian Church back in l971-1974. They were Missionaries in Chile for several years and raised a family. Until recently all were living in Joplin, but the younger generations are moving on. Jason and family have gone to Italy as Missionaries; Chris and Audrey and family recently went to Eastern Europe with a seven person team to work with Muslims. Tim Casey is remaining in Joplin as a teacher in the College Heights Christian School. Daughter Emily Casey recently graduated from her elementary school and remains in Joplin with Phil and Susan who are head of LATM with offices in College Press Building in Joplin.
Noted in the Fifty Years Ago Column of The Fort Scott Tribune, dated 1958, was listed an old time Arcadia family--The Duntons. Margaret Dunton Weede who taught music in Arcadia and also in Eugene WAre School in Fort Scott was listed with her husband Brigadier General Richard GArfield Weede of the Marines and their son Richard Dunton Weede. Margaret was the Aunt of Susan Tassi, Arcadia and Nancy Dunton of Kansas City.
Enroute home from the Christian Church Convention in Nashville, Tenn., Ralph and Cindy Shead visited her Dad and R.H. Geurin's cousin, Mary Belle Brantley in Murray, Ky. On to Arkansas they spent a night with her Aunt Ardie and Uncle John McKinney in Arkansas. The Sheads celebrated Cindy's birthday while in Tennessee visiting the Andrew Jackson home.
The death of Rev. Jesse S. Snider, 83, one time pastor of Arcadia Assembly of God Church was noted by old time Arcadia friends who remember the family. Son, Steve Snider, whose wife is the former Marilyn Miles Snider, lives with his family in Pittsburg. Our sympathy goes to the family.
When Mitzi Ray and Cademon brought their friends Marie Clinton, son Chandler and baby daughter Addie from Tulsa to the Shead farm, they were joined by friend Charity Jackson, Fort Scott to spend the day making apple sauce, and apple butter. At break time, they prepared a hand held lunch called Lettuce Wrap that they shared with the family.
Following Sunday morning Church services on August 10, the newly appointed board, Gary and Patty Peterson, John and Vera Parrish, Wayne and Christie Parrih met with Pastor David Peterson in Christian Church Sanctuary. The results of the meeting will be discussed at a later date. Pastor David's sermon was taken from the Second chapter of the book of James. He was a brother and disciple of Jesus. Questions asked were: Does the church show favoritism? Do we follow the Golden Rule? Who is your neighbor? Remember Jesus Lives! Josie Bryant enjoyed the SS teaching of Patty Peterson in the youth class.
