During its monthly board meeting, the USD 234 Board of Education reviewed and approved the 2008-09 school budget.
The capital outlay fund will be allotted a little more than $1 million to be used for equipment purchases and the renovation and remodeling of district buildings.
The district has budgeted $10,000 in operating resources for the bilingual education fund, and $29,000 for the driver training program. The district's food service department will be able to provide nutritious meals to school-aged children with a fund of a little more than $1 million.
The special education department fund, which pays the salaries of special education teachers in addition to any other special education expenditures, was set at more than $2 million, and the vocational education fund was allotted $471,000.
The district has budgeted $30,000 for professional development, while the summer school programs will be allowed almost $23,000 in funding. The four-year-old at-risk program will be granted almost $69,000, and the at-risk program, which services kindergarten through grade 12, will be designated nearly $2 million.
Also at the board meeting Monday night, USD 234 Special Education Coordinator Pennie Province explained to members of the board that each school district must have a policy in place for special education services. The board approved the Kansas State Department of Education Process Handbook for Special Education as the local district's policy for special education programs and services.
The board conducted the folllowing business on Monday:
* Approved the resignations of Kitty Lewis, Fort Scott High School paraeducator; Julie Lattimer, Winfield Scott paraeducator; and Jared Martin, FSHS paraeducator.
* A leave of absence was approved for FSHS cook June Hill, and the transfer of Sharon Button from Winfield Scott teacher-aide to Winfield Scott paraeducator.
* In addition, board members approved the employment of Steve Powell as a Winfield Scott four-hour custodian; Barbara Bradley as a Fort Scott Middle School cook; Tawnya Glasscock as a Winfield Scott at-risk teacher-aide; and Lisa Matthew as a FSHS paraeducator. The board also approved the addition of a four-hour band teacher-aide position for FSMS.
* An auditing services contract with Diehl, Banwart, and Bolton for the fiscal year ending in June 30, 2008.
* A pay request for roofing projects at Eugene Ware and the Board of Education.
* A pay request for Saterlee Plumbing for HVAC summer projects.
* A petty cash report for the Board of Education office and the USD 234 Recreation Commission for the 2007-08 school year.
