Born: Fort Scott

Current residence: Fort Scott

Currently employed: Bourbon County Sheriff

What are some of your qualifications for this position? Involved in county government for 27 years; familiarity with budgeting process and different functions of various offices.

Have you held a public office before? Bourbon County Sheriff; Mayor of Bronson.

Why are you running for this office? I'm not old enough to retire and simply because I've decided not to seek re-election as sheriff doesn't mean I have lost my desire for public service. I feel I have made sound decisions in my current position. If elected, I will make sound decisions in the future. Being a Bourbon County native, my roots are here and I would like to continue to assist in the betterment of th county. Being semi-retired after January, I will also have the time to dedicate to this position, which it requires and deserves.

What do you believe your strengths will be in this office if elected? I communicate (with) and listen well to other people. Throughout my years of service, I have made numerous contacts with people in different positions in various governmental positions from the federal level on down. Having had these contacts, I feel will be a substantial qualification in seeking ideas and finances. I am very personable and during my tenure as sheriff, people have approached me with problems that were not sheriff's office related but knowing I would assist them, if possible.

How important do you feel city/county cooperation is to the area? Cooperation between the county and city is not a maybe; it's a must. While each county commissioner has a portion of Fort Scott, each has incorporated cities in their own district. Fort Scott has its own commission and specialized departments. Most of the other cities do not. Providing assistance to them is essential as well as to all the small communities that are not incorporated.

What community boards/organizations do you belong to? Various professional organizations and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Additional comments: Bourbon County is my home. I care deeply about what happens here. I have endeavored in the past to keep costs as low as possible and keep efficiency above acceptable levels. We, as a county, are approaching some trying times, at best, with rising prices on everything. Very few of us will not have to alter our households and businesses to meet rising expenses. Government, from the federal level to the lowest level of municipalities, must do the same. Efficiency, prioritizing and accountability must be obtained without compromise. I personally feel the next county commission will make decisions that dictate how we endure and recover from the economic situation we are facing. Regardless of your party affiliation, or who you support, go vote. If you can not support me, that's okay. That does not mean we can't be friends or neighbors. I would like to thank those who have supported and aided me in the past. It has been an experience that I'll cherish all of my life. Thank you.
