| Fort Scott Hurricanes head coach Tim Free acknowledges the miscounting of the team's total number of league championships as the seven league meet first-place trophies the team has won in as many seasons are on display during the team banquet Wednesday night. The Hurricanes will go for the eighth straight championship next season when they host the league meet. Photos of each age group will run in the Tribune beginning with Friday's edition. It was a simple error that anyone could have made. The Fort Scott Hurricanes miscounted the number of league championships they were going for last Saturday in Coffeyville.
It was thought they were going for their eighth straight league championship and even had T-shirts made that referred to the team goal of winning No. 8
Oops.
"Just say we can swim but we can't add," Hurricanes head coach Tim Free said to the audience at the season-ending team banquet Wednesday evening at Buck Run Community Center.
Of course, the team has still won seven straight league championships, which is an outstanding feat, having lost a dual not once since Free became head coach.
The error came down to Free trying to remember exactly when he moved to Fort Scott and became the coach.
"We had thought we had bought the house in 2000 and moved in in February of 2001," Free explained to the Tribune before the banquet. "It was actually that we bought it in 2001 and moved in in 2002.
"But seven years is no less impressive. We won it the first year I coached and we've won it every year since."
And money is cost to make the T-shirts isn't necessarily wasted.
"Save them for next year," Free told the crowd. "They'll still be relevant!"
The Hurricanes won this year's championship in last Saturday's league meet at Coffeyville. At that meet, several team members were given certificates for scoring the most points of any swimmer in their age group.
In the "A" division, Nicholas King won the award for six-and-under boy swimmers, Bryce Hinde for 13-and-14 year-old girls and Caz Del Chiaro for 15-18 boys. In the "B" Division, Aly Miller won for 11-12 girls and Taylor Lemmon for 13-14 girls.
Hinde set seven new league records at the meet, from which the Tribune expect more details to become available next week.
Also noted was Patricia Schafer's accomplishment of setting two new records for the fastest 100-yard individual medley and 50-yard butterfly in the history of the team. She set those records in races at the Fort Scott city pool during the season.
The club also brought the 15 new swimmers to the team this year up to the front and handed out bags to all the team swimmers which included tabs that showed their fastest times in each event this season.
After the banquet, the swimmers went up to the city pool for a pool party.
