Fort Scott's entry in the Cal Ripken Baseball Kansas State 10-year-old Tournament was eliminated by the Haysville Dirtbags in elimination bracket play Sunday afternoon at Don Hewett Field.

The Dirtbags won that game 6-1 but fell to Cimarron River in the very next game, 3-2, despite a sixth-inning rally. Fort Scott finished fourth in the tournament while Haysville placed third.

The day's play began with Emporia's 6-3 win over Cimarron River in the winners' bracket final. That put Emporia straight into Monday's championship game against the Rattlers (see story above), who earned the rematch after beating Haysville.

Game 11: Emporia 6, Cimarron River 3.

Cimarron River scored first when Timothy Fitzgerald drove in Cole Hinkle with a double in the bottom of the first inning.

But Emporia came back strong in the top of the fourth, scoring all six of their runs on five hits. Cimarron River scored two in the bottom of the fifth and had two runners on with one out in the sixth. But Emporia pitcher Tate Demler struck out the last two batters to end the game.

Demler actually started the game as the pitcher but was moved to shortstop with two out in the third, then went back on the hill at the start of the sixth. His combined stats were one unearned run on one hit and two walks with five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Demler also had two hits and a run batted in. Tyler Hertlein also had two hits for Emporia. Fitzgerald had two hits for the Rattlers while Kaiden Long drove in two runs.

Game 12: Haysville 6, Fort Scott 1.

Haysville pitcher Trent Allen held Fort Scott two an unearned run on two hits -- both by Jacob Bradbury -- and three walks while striking out 16 batters.

The Dirtbags took advantage of eight errors, three of which led to its first-inning run by Allen, who reached on an error. stole second and scored on two more errors.

Three errors helped Haysville score four runs in the third inning to make it 5-0. The final run was posted in the fifth inning.

Fort Scott's only run came in the top of the sixth. Jordan Phillips reached on an error, going to second when the ball went into the dugout. He moved to third on passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Bradbury was Fort Scott's Most Valuable Player while shortstop Dalton Barnes won the WOW Award, which was handed out to a player from each team in all tourney games for making an outstanding play.

Dakota Rodd and Matthew Johnson had two hits each for Haysville.

Game 13: Cimarron River 3, Haysville 2.

This game featured the best combination of pitching and defense of any in the tournament. Both teams' pitching had no-hitters going for the first three innings and there were only two errors in the contest

Rodd, pitching for Haysville, didn't allow a baserunner until Jarod Hasik tripled to lead off the fourth inning. Cade Hinkle drove him in on a groundout with the game's first run.

Fitzgerald then doubled to the left-field fence and later stole third. He scored on a wild pitch to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead.

Stevie Lira, pitching for the Rattlers, sat down the first eight batters he faced before walking Blake Dickey in the top of the third. He then retired the next five batters before finally surrendering a hit to Blake Manuel in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Cimarron River got an insurance run. Mershek Wiltshire drew a lead off walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hinkle reached on a two-out error and Fitzgerald walked to load the bases. Lira was hit by a pitch to force in Wiltshire.

Haysville finally got its hitting going in the top of the sixth. Dickey led off with a single and an error on the throw back to the infield allowed him to become the first Dirtbag to get past first base. Seth Strohm followed with a triple to right.

The Rattlers changed pitchers, bringing Hasik on. But a wild pitch allowed Strohm to score before he struck out Rodd.

Allen then drew a walk. He stole second but Hasik struck out Johnson for the second out.

A passed ball allowed Allen to get to third with the tying run. Then Benton drew a walk, putting the potential game-winning run on base. He took second on a wild pitch but Hasik got a line-drive out to right fielder Dylan Ketcherside to end the contest.

Lira, the winning pitcher for the Rattlers, allowed three hits and a walk while striking out four. Hasik allowed two walks but struck out two.

Dodd allowed two runs and three hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out five.
