W.H. Watson, the Frisco conductor who was stabbed near Chandler, Okla., is reported slowly improving. It is reported that Watson was stabbed nine times. It is said a passenger jumped upon the thug and beat him into insensibility, the man being for three days so near unconscious that the officers could not get a statement from him regarding the attack.
A letter signed by 28 Frisco engineers of Fort Scott was sent to the water board stating in unmistakable language that the Fort Scott water is far preferable to deep well water and advising that improvement of the present supply be undertaken, rather than experimenting with wells.

Heart-rending grief was manifested and silent sympathy was expressed by hundreds of relatives and friends July 19 when a double funeral was held at the First Christian church with reverent tribute paid the memory of a popular young couple, Orland Lewis and his bride, Bertha Coonrod Lewis, who lost their lives in a tragic motorcycle accident. The crowd at the church was estimated at about 800 persons. There were many standing at the doors. Many relatives and friends were of the Drywood and Arcadia areas. The bodies rested in similar caskets. Rarely has been seen such a magnificent array of floral offerings. Rev. J.R. Babb read brief obituaries of Orland and Bertha. Both were fine examples of fine young American manhood and womanhood, nice in appearance and personality, industrious, patriotic and genial in their contacts. It required an hour for the great concourse of friends to pass the two biers. Burial was side by side in Evergreen Cemetery.

Photo caption: "Johnny Mayhew, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mayhew, 1102 South Judson, displays musket balls, arrowheads, lead slugs, a button from a Civil War uniform and a dime minted in 1853, found in a field just north of Mill Creek bridge on US-69. The relics weigh nine pounds and fill a cigar box. The youth said he went to the area 'on a hunch.' He had been told four years ago that relics had been found in the vicinity." -- Tribune photo
The city commissioners voted to purchase two gas masks for the fire department to be used in fires where the firemen are required to enter burning buildings or where there is danger from fumes and other hazards. The commission also decided to place a coil in the drinking well at Gunn Park so cold water will be available at the fountain in the park.

Liberty Savings and Loan Association salutes Dave Milburn -- this week marks his 14th vacation at the Bourbon County Fair. In 1969 his move to the country brought together his daughter, a Welsh pony and 4-H together for the first time. Even after his daughter outgrew 4-H three years ago, Dave continued to work with horse lovers at the Vaqueros Club and the county fair. He gives 100 percent of himself to lend a hand, express encouragement and share in the joys of a youngster's achievements. Dave Milburn is just one reason why 4-H works here in Bourbon County. It is a week-long reminder that the future of agri-business in Bourbon County is in the most capable hands.
