County fairs offer something for everyone

Thursday, July 17, 2008

It hardly seems like it should be the week after the 4th of July, with the Bourbon County Fair in a week and a half away, but it is. For 4-Her's, their parents, our Office and the numerous volunteers who make the fair a success, this hectic time of year brings a new challenge everyday.

There is something for everybody at County Fairs. From carnival rides to snow cones, from chickens to pigs, from garden produce to pies, from crafts to sewing and from rodeos to truck and tractor pull, something is bound to spark your interest. The Bourbon County Fair was moved back a week to July 20-26.

Exhibits will be entered on Monday, and remain in place all week. Several of the events will be in the evenings for spectator convince. The horse show will be on Sunday evening, the lamb show on Tuesday evening, the beef show on Wednesday evening, the Style Review on Thursday evening, and the Junior Livestock sale will be on Friday evening. The dog show will be held on Monday morning with the hog show on Thursday morning. These 4-H events with the exception of the Style Review and horse show will be held in the show barn. The Style Review is held in the FSCC Round Room; the horse show in the Grand Stand arena.

4-Hers and FFA members who exhibit at the county fair have put in numerous hours of time and effort in preparing their projects. Through this hard work, their knowledge base is widened and life skills are developed. The fair is truly a learning experience for all involved.

Other events to be in the Grand Stand arena will be as follows: Monday, Pedal Tractor Pull and Slim Hunziker Casting Contest; Tuesday, Youth Rodeo; Wednesday, Open Rodeo; Thursday, Draft Horse Pull; Friday, Garden Tractor Pull; and Saturday, Jordan Snyder Memorial ATV Rodeo. The All Seasons Amusement carnival will be open Monday through Saturday evenings. Additionally, the Outlaw Truck and Tractor pull will be held on Friday, August 1.

Local 4-Hers competing in the Bourbon County Ambassador contest are out selling advanced tickets to the Grand Stand events. Make sure to get your tickets early and help these youngsters.

Once again, all enclosed building will be air conditioned. The 4-H Council concession stand will be in the 4-H Building with daily lunch specials.

I would like to thank all who help before, during, and after the fair to make it a success. A special thanks to the award sponsors and livestock buyers for your continued support of Bourbon County's youth.

The Extension Office will be relocated to the Yeager Memorial Building during the fair. The phone number to reach us will be (620) 223- 3455.

Make plans to attend the 2008 Bourbon County Fair, July 20-26. See you there!
