| Youth Activity Team member Paul Martin (left) reviews the final measurements of the World's longest chain of pennies with records manager for Guinness World Records Kaoru Ishikawa Saturday morning in the Fort Scott Middle School parking lot. |
At about 9:50 a.m., Saturday, records manager for Guinness World Records, Kaoru Ishikawa officially announced the community of Fort Scott as world record holders after hundreds of volunteers laid 40.32 miles of pennies end-to-end.
The event took place in the Fort Scott Middle School parking lot starting on Tuesday evening and running through about 2:58 a.m. Saturday morning. It was at this time that Youth Activity member Paul Martin laid down the final penny -- minus the sixteen held for the ceremonial finish later in the morning.
Many area residents appeared for the finalizing of the record, which took 3,406,234 donated pennies (more than 10 tons) to complete.
The entire process is being used to provide awareness and seed money for a $4 million renovation to Ellis Park.

It's kind of mind-boggling to think that those pennies would stretch nearly to Lacygne if laid out along the highway! 40 Miles! Wow! I guess in reality though, this line of pennies has actually stretched round the World!
Awesome! Congratulations YAT Team and Volunteers! Great Job!
