100 YEARS AGO

(1908)

Well, Frank Davis and Jim Durbin couldn't stand it any longer when they read in the Kansas City Times this morning that Blaine Durbin was at bat four times yesterday, with two safe hits and three put outs. They at once planned to go to Chicago and see the kid work. They leave tomorrow for the "Windy City." It's dollars to peanuts that if Blaine gets a safe drive with the bases full Chicago won't be half large enough for Jim Durbin, whose joys will know no bounds. Harry McCoy, who has some business at Chicago at this time, is going along, and as he is something of fan, too, he is expected to see the Cubs in action.

The papers were in error in stating that it was Sixth Street which is to be paved from Scott Avenue to Lowman Street. This is Second Street which is slated for bricking for this district. Sixth Street for a distance of 18 blocks will be macadamized.

Tarringtnon, N.Y. (AP) John D. Rockefeller celebrated his 94th birthday July 8. His schedule: early rise; 8 a.m. breakfast; his valet, John Yordi, reads him newspapers and congratulations from all over the world; nine holes of golf before lunch; short nap after lunch; two-hour auto ride over estate; 6:30 dinner attended by children and grandchildren; listens to hymns on pipe organ then plays favorite solitaire card game of numerica; early bed at 9 p.m

Roy Johnston was cited by police on the charge of impeding the progress of the fire truck on its way to the grass fire near the condensery. The firemen allege that Johnston drove his car directly between the truck and the chief's car on East Wall Street. The case has been continued on account of Judge Lardner being out-of-town.

Sharp's Barbecue in Belltown open 6 a.m. to midnight, serving breakfast, barbecued ribs, beef and pork, T-bone steak, chicken fried steak and hamburger steak. -- Adv.

Jess Bloomfield, owner of J. Bloomfield and Son, is participating in "Operation Upturn, "a nation-wide General Electric program to stimulate an upturn in the country's economy. A freight car of GE major appliances ended its journey from Louisville at Bloomfield's yesterday. The car is one of 87 that made up a mile-long "Bargain Train" containing merchandise valued in excess of $1 million at retail.

Maxine Hereford has returned from a six-week stay on the Bahamas.

Charles Bruce of Kansas City, who for many years was employed by the Vogue in Fort Scott, has been here visiting relatives.
