100 YEARS AGO

(1908)

In a report for the weather for June there were no hot days during which the temperature rose to 90 or above. The total rainfall was 10.57 inches, which is 5.83 inches above the average rainfall for June, and which is the greatest rainfall of any June in our 41 years' record. Only 10 days of the month were without precipitation. The nearest approach to this June's record is that of 1888 which was 8.31 inches.

Frank Reeds, city editor of the Republican, has taken a month's leave of absence and will devote his entire time from now until the primaries to his candidacy for clerk of the district court. F.W. Brinkerhoff, a young gentleman from the state university, with W.R. Smith and Clyde Commons, another KU man, have joined the staff of writers at the Republican office.

Policeman Bollinger continues efficient service as health officer. He is seeing that the weeds are all cut and kept cut. The city has one vacancy on its official list and that is for the office of dog catcher.

75 YEARS AGO

(1933)

The mercury took another ascension in Fort Scott yesterday and reached a high mark of 108 for the hottest day of the summer. It was a torrid weekend, yesterday's record following marks of 105 both Friday and Saturday. The mercury maximum has not been lower than 100 the past five days.

A deal has been closed whereby Earl Jones, D'arcy McElroy and Harold Wagner have purchased the Locoweed beer establishment across the Missouri line on Highway 54-E, 4 1/2 miles east of the city. The consideration was not announced. The new owners are all Fort Scott men. Mr. Lockwood will give his time to his restaurant business in Fort Scott.

The Elks 4th of July patriotic program at Bridal Veil Park is attracting a great deal of attention. The baby pageant has a large number of entries -- 110. A silver cup will be awarded to the prettiest baby girl and most handsome boy. "Miss Fort Scott" will be crowned at 9 p.m., followed by dancing and music by the Rhythm Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. Albright of Garland had business in the city.

At Rock Creek Lake yesterday, a local fisherman caught a nice size bass just after he had hauled out four young turtles which were getting his bait.

50 YEARS AGO

(1958)

Bruce Marble and Granite Works of Fort Scott has received a government contract to make granite grave markers. The contract calls for a minimum of 270 markers per month, starting this month, according to Charles Bruce, owner of the company. The markers will be sent to national cemeteries throughout the country to be placed on soldiers' graves. The Bruce plant has been working at near capacity on a double shift.

Mrs. Rose Johnson, Route 5, bookkeeper and nurse at the Dr. L.L. Cooper office, is taking a vacation. Miss Kay Brinkman is looking after her duties.

Bill Ewing, a Montgomery Ward employee, was the winner of the cup offered by the company for the biggest sales quota for the month of June. Betty Simpson was the winner in April and Ross Riley, in May.

Fort Scott will be represented at the hot rod races at Osawatomie tonight and Joplin tomorrow. The local drivers did well last week on two tracks. Lloyd Tanner, driving Vern Large's modified 77 at Pittsburgh Sunday, night placed third in the consolation. Verland Simmons, driving his No. 91, was third in the slow heat at Pittsburg. Junior Sims finished third in the modified feature.
