Carter was one of six men who qualifier for Fort Scott Community College's team -- one woman also qualified. He was one of three competing in bareback.
Carter was actually two spots behind teammate Chancy Lovinggood after the first go. Lovinggood tied for ninth place in the first go with a score of 76.0 points while Carter tied for 11th with a score of 75.0. Michael Brozak was 28th in the first go with a score of 63.0.
In the second go, Carter's 73.0 tied for fifth best. Lovinggood was unable to score, which destroyed his chances of making Saturday's final. Brozak scored a 54.0.
Brozak had a 69.0 in the third go on Friday but that was not enough to make the final. Lovinggood scored 63 points. Carter managed only a 67 on his go but his earlier scores were good enough to allow him to advance to the long go.
Saturday, Carter scored a 75.0 in the long go, tying for the 11th-best score. His final total was 285.0 points.
The event winner was Kacee Field of Utah Valley State college with 325.0 points. Matt Smith of the University of Tennessee-Martin was next with 305.5 points. Karlon Knudson of Oklahoma Panhandle State University was third with 302.0 points.
Unlike other sports, college rodeo does not place two-year and four-year schools in separate divisions. Schools like FSCC were competing for honors alongside schools such as Texas A & M, Fresno State, the University of Wyoming and the University of Montana, to name just a few.
Fort Scott's Jake McKellips finished 26th in saddle bronc. He scored 69.5 points in the first go and 58.5 in the third go. He did not score in the second go. His final total was 128.0 points. Chuck Schmidt of Black Hills State (S.D.) was the national champion with 301.0 points. Cody Angland of Western Texas was second with 291.5 and Trell Etbauer of OPSU was third with 290.0.
Billie Saebens and his partner, Dakota Callicoat of Southeastern Oklahoma State, tied for 30th place in team roping after finding success on only of of their three goes.
Fort Scott's lone distaff member, Cali Griffin, placed 18th in breakaway roping. She was 16th in the first go, tied for 29th in the second and 12th in the third. Hope Thompson of McNeese State was the winner followed by Krista Johnson of OPSU and Juba Kyle of Texas A&M.
The all-around men's champion was Wyatt Atlhoff of New Mexico State. The women's all-around champ was Arena de la Cruz of Weatherford (Texas) junior college.
Walla Walla Community College (Wash.) was men's team champion with 740 points. Western Texas was next with 567.5 points with Tennessee- Martin third with 520.0. Fort Scott finished 39th with 90.0 points.
Nevada-Las Vegas won the women's title with 470 points. New Mexico State was second with 432.5 with OPSU third with 427.5.
