McCullough, Allen win Saturday medals

WICHITA -- Pleasanton won two medals in the Class 2A State Track and Field Meet at Wichita State University's Cessna Stadium.

Senior Danny McCullough finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.76 seconds The winning time was 39.03, turned in by Bennington senior Lawson Montgomery. Solomon senior Derek Knight was second in 40.46 and Meade junior Taylor Headrick was third in 40.67.

McCullough's medal in the 300's was his second of the meet. He finished fifth in pole vault on Friday.

Senior Megan Allen won the Blu-Jays' other medal when she took seventh in the girls' 200-meter dash in 27.77 seconds. Lauren Pickens, a freshman from Peabody-Burns, won the event in 25.93. Ellis junior Whitney Taylor was second in 26.06 and Sublette senior Hope Lucas was third in 26.98.

Allen, who qualified for State in at least one event all four years of high school, finished her career with at least four individual medals. She was also entered in the 100 meters and competed in preliminaries Saturday morning. However, she had the 10th best time of 13.28 and missed out on going to finals. Only the top eight from preliminaries advanced.

The top seven finishers in each event medaled. Pleasanton school finished the meet with three medals.

Senior Michelle Mitchell was also hoping to medal for Pleasanton Saturday as she competed in pole vault. She finished in 12th place with a best of seven feet, six inches. Keegan Williams, a sophomore from Shawnee Maranatha Academy, won the event at 10 feet even.

Final team standings showed Pleasanton's boys tied with Uniontown, Inman and Spearville for 33rd place as each school scored seven points. Howard-West Elk was the team champion with 47 points followed by Sterling with 46 and Bennington with 43 1/2.

On the girls' side, Pleasanton tied for 38th with West Elk and Valley Heights with one point. Atwood was the champion with 63 points followed by Sublette with 51 and Ellis with 42.

Only events in which Pleasanton athletes medaled are shown. All finishers in those events are shown, regardless of school.
