Two hardy veterans with Vernon County ties

What did the late McKinley Wooden, last survivor of Harry S. Truman's Battery D from World War I, and Frank Woodruff Buckles, the last surviving veteran of World War I, have in common? Both were awarded the French Legion of Honor military decoration. Both were born in Harrison County, Mo. They had something else in common. McKinley Wooden was born March 2, 1895, and came by train with his parents to Walker, Mo. in 1893. Frank Buckles was born Feb. 2, 1901 and moved east of Walker, Mo. when his parents bought a farm there in 1910.
