The top four finishers in each event qualified for State while the top six earned medals.
Jayhawk girls were especially dominant, scoring 132 team points to win the meet easily over second-place Wellsville, which had 85 points. Caney Valley was third in the 16-team field with 56 points.
Jayhawk-Linn, though not quite as dominant, was still well ahead of the field. The Jayhawks scored 83 points to 70 for second-place Osage City. Caney Valley was third with 69 points.
Every girl who is not a freshman will be a returnee to the State Championships. Jayhawk-Linn will send 11 individuals and all three relays as it qualified in 16 events.
Sophomore Taylor Dawson, last year's Class 3A State champion in long jump, will return in that event and will also run in the 200-meter dash at State. She won both events Friday, taking long jump at 16 feet, 7 1/2" inches, winning a tie-breaker with Rachel Wilson of Riverton. Both of them were the only individuals who went more than 15' 2". Dawson also won the 200 meters in 26.91.
Senior Brogan Hoover will go to State for the third time. This time around, it will be in the 800 meters, which she won Friday in 2:32.36. Sophomore teammate Meriel Long took second in the 800 in 2:35.18. This will be Long's first trip to State as an individual, although she was part of the relay teams last year.
Hoover was an 800 qualifier last year and a 400-meter qualifier in 2006.
Sophomore Morgan Eastwood won both hurdles races here and will return to State in both. She took the 100-meter race in 16.60 seconds, which was 1.2 seconds better than the runner-up. Eastwood won the 300's in 47.31, which beat the runner-up by 1.6 seconds.
Three distance runners advanced for the Jayhawks. Senior Stephanie Mayhugh will return in the 1,600 meters after finishing third here in 5:58. Juniors Madison Beckman and Sylvia Grant return in the 3,200. Beckman was second Friday in 12:46 while Grant was fourth in 13:05. Mayhugh and Grant are both three-time State qualifiers as each went to Wichita in their respective events in 2006 as well.
Junior Cassie Rockers, like Hoover, will be back at State but in a different event. She was a qualifier last year in the 200 meters but qualified this year in triple jump after finishing third with a mark of 32' 4".
Sophomore Amory Miller is another who will be in a different event this year. A javelin qualifier last year, Miller will go this year in the 100-meter hurdles after taking third place in 18.50.
Freshman Shelby Krull will advance to her first State meet as a pole vaulter. She finished third here with a mark of eight feet even. Classmate Chelsea Beckman will make her first trip in discus. She was fourth at Baxter with a mark of 107' 2".
And not only did all three of Jayhawk-Linn's girls' relay teams advance to State, they are also all Regional champs. The 4x100-meter relay team won by almost a full second over Wellsville in setting a new school record with a time of 51.06. The 4x400 team ran a 4:14.87 to win over Eureka by almost nine seconds. The 4x800 team turned in a 10:45 to win over Wellsville by 16 seconds.
There were three other medalists for the Jayhawks. Miller was fifth in javelin and Elisha Jones was sixth in that even after tie-breakers sorted things out when both recorded throws of 99' 11" Kaylee Brownback finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 55.18.
Jayhawk boys qualified for State in 11 events. They will be represented by six individuals and all three relays.
Sophomore Steven Mann won two events as he took long jump at 21' 6" and triple jump at 40' 7" His long jump mark was 15 inches better than the second-place finisher while his triple jump was almost two feet better. Mann medaled in both these events at State last year.
Sophomore Briar Snyder returns to State in both hurdles races. In the 110-meters, Snyder took second place in 15 seconds flat. Southeast-Cherokee's Nick Renfro was credited with the exact same time in winning the race, the final result probably settled by cameras. In the 300's, Snyder was second in 41.65 with Renfro again winning.
Junior Dan Purinton will go to State for the first time as a result of his second-place finish in javelin. He went 158' 8" at the Regional.
Senior Brock Johanning became a three-time State qualifier as a result of his third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, turning in a time of 15.20.
Junior Ryan Sutherland and sophomore Kris Bogan will each qualify for the first time. Sutherland was fourth in the 800 meters in 2:10.56. Bogan was fourth in shot put with a mark of 45' 6".
The 4x100 and 4x400 relays each finished second while the 4x800 took fourth. The 4x1 turned in a time of 44.90, the 4x4 a 3:37.40 and the 4x8 an 8:48.75. The 4x1 and 4x8 were qualifiers last season.
Three more medaled for Jayhawk's boys. Purinton and Roman Lopez tied for fifth in the high jump at 5' 6" and Johanning was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 42 seconds flat.
The Class 3A portion of the State meet begins with track events at 2:10 p.m. and field events at 3 Friday afternoon then continues Saturday with events throughout the day.
Only events in which Jayahwk-Linn athletes medaled are shown. All six medalists are shown, regardless of school. The top four finishers in each event advanced to the State Meet.
