PLEASANTON -- Pleasanton will send 17 entrants to this weekend's Class 2A State Track and Field Championship while Uniontown will send 15 there as a result of finishes at Pleasanton's Class 2A Regional Meet here Friday.

Pleasanton's boys finished second in the team standings, scoring 63 points. Uniontown was fifth with 51 points. Howard-West Elk was the winner with 88 points.

Pleasanton's girls were third with 72 points while Uniontown finished eighth with 36. Pittsburg Colgan won the meet with 85 points.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for this weekend's Class 2A State Track and Field Championship at Wichita State University. The top six finishers earned medals.

Senior Megan Allen won three events for Pleasanton's girls. She won the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.13 seconds, the 200 in 27.01 and triple jump with an effort of 33 feet, 11 inches, which was nearly two feet better than the runner-up. Allen has now qualified for State in the 100 and 200 all four years of her high-school career. She has made it in triple jump for the second straight season after medaling last year.

Allen is also a part of the Blu-Jay 4x100-meter relay team that was a Regional champion with a time of 52.77 seconds. Michelle Mitchell, Carlee Campbell and Rachel Richmond are also on that team.

Mitchell, a senior, will return to State in pole vault after finishing fourth here with a mark of 7' 6". She was also fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.53 seconds. She also won another medal as she finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 55.81.

Richmond, a junior, placed second in high jump at 4' 8" and fourth in the 400 meters in 65.16. Sophomore Campbell rounds out the Blu-Jay girls' State qualifiers after finishing fourth in triple jump with a mark of 30' 2". Campbell was also a medalist in the 100-meter hurdles as she finished sixth in 18.94.

Pleasanton's 4x400-meter relay team was fifth in 4:50.92. Sophomore Kim Robertson took fifth in shot put with a mark of 31' 9" and sixth in discus as 96' 6".

Uniontown's girls did not win any events but will see two of its three individuals (five events in all) return to State this year. Sophomore Abbie Smith, who was second in Class 2A at State in long jump last year, will return in that event after finishing second in the Regional with a mark of 15' 5". Smith will also return in the 100-meter hurdles after finishing third with a time of 17.83.

Junior Katie Spainhoward is also a returning State qualifier. She will be back in shot put after taking third with a mark of 33' 1 1/2" and in discus as she was fourth Friday at 100' 2".

Senior Riley Stephens will be a first-time qualifier after taking third in triple jump at 30' 6".

Uniontown's other two medals were both fifth-place marks in sprints. Emily Aikins ran a 29.18 in the 200 and Marliss Allen ran a 65.29 in the 400.

Uniontown's boys will have three athletes represent the school in six events, led by double-winner Zach Mason. The senior won both hurdles races, taking the 110's in 15.79 and the 300's in 42.06. Mason qualified in both events in 2006 and was a member of last year's 4x100-meter relay that which finished second in Class 2A. Mason was also fourth in triple jump at 40' 7 1/2".

Jamie Shelton, a senior, will return to State in high jump. Friday he took third at 5' 10" while teammate Drew Johnson, a junior, was second at six feet even. Shelton also advanced to State in the javelin after winning that event with a throw of 157' 1", which was over about 9 1/2 feet farther than the runner-up.

Johnson won a second medal when he took fifth in triple jump with a mark of 40' 5 1/4". Uniontown's 4x100 relay was sixth in 46.32.

Pleasanton's boys won two events. Senior Chris Duggins won shot put with a mark of 44' 4 1/2" and will return in an event he qualified for in 2006. He also was second in discus, an event in which he made a State appearance last year, with a mark of 125' 7".

Senior Danny McCullough qualified in pole vault for the third straight year. He was the Regional champion as he cleared 13 feet, which was 2 1/2 higher than the runner-up. McCullough was also second in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.08.

Senior Kodee McKee, sophomore Tyler Myrick and freshman Skyler Martin will be going to State for the first time. McKee was third in javelin at 141' 9". Myrick was fourth in pole vault at 8' 6". Martin was fourth in discus at 111' 7".

The Blu-Jays will also see the 4x100-meter relay team of Gannon Coffman, Dakota Kern, Cody Maloney and McCullough go to State after they finished third in 45.08.

Pleasanton's other medalists were David Sowards, fifth in the 100 meters in 11.78; Joey Shoopman, fifth in the high jump at 5' 8"; McCullough, sixth in triple jump with a mark of 40' 3 3/4"; Dakota Kern, sixth in the 200 in 24.34 The Jays' 4x400-meter team was sixth in 3:44.17.

Both schools will send their qualifiers to Wichita Friday with Class 2A events scheduled to begin just after 2 p.m. Competition will also take place beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and going all day long.

Only events in which Pleasanton and Uniontown athletes medaled are shown. All six medalists are shown, regardless of school. The top four finishers in each event advanced to the State Meet.
