Wildcat pitcher shuts down Eagles

Thursday, May 15, 2008

YATES CENTER -- Uniontown's first season of softball came to an end here Tuesday in a semifinal of the Yates Center Class 2-1A Regional Softball Tournament at Kluendor Field.

Yates Center's pitcher, Heffern, held the Eagles (7-6) to one hit, which came off the bat of Cassie Schwalm, as the Wildcats took a 6-0 win.

"We struggled against a good pitcher and were unable to get runners on base and use our aggressive running game," Eagle head coach Alan Shinn said. "We will have to improve our hitting against good pitching in order to be successful next season.

"This was the end of a pretty good first season. We are a better team now than we were in March."

Heffern allowed just the one hit and one walk. She hit on batter and struck out 13. Warren (5-5) allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out two.

The high school careers of five seniors -- Alison Warren, Diana Ayers, Kimi Brooks, Juliea Decker and Lacey Page -- ended with this loss. But they can also say that the first Uniontown softball season ended with a winning record.

Humboldt defeated Marmaton Valley, 8-0, in the other semifinal and earned a return trip to State by beating Yates Center, 4-0, in the finals. The Cubs are 19-2 while Yates Center finished 12-10.
