Rain delays cause unusual end of season junior varsity matchup

Nevada, Mo. -- Nevada baseball wrapped up the regular season with a 7-5 loss at Carthage Friday night in a preview of the first-round district tournament game Monday night at Carthage.

Carthage (8-15, 5-3) took advantage of the absence of four Nevada seniors due to a previously-planned trip to hit the Tigers nine times and win its fifth conference game of the year despite committing six errors.

Nevada (8-9, 3-5) had six hits and left 11 runners on base in one of its more inefficient outings. Ron Johnson started for the Tigers, pitching four innings before being pulled for Austin Johnson, who went the next three innings and picked up the loss.

The game was tied in the top of the fifth after a Nevada rally erased a 4-0 deficit but two Carthage runs in the bottom of the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth was enough to close the deal as Nevada failed to score again.

Tyler Dobson and Ben Fisher managed to get on base in the top of the seventh with Nevada down three and no outs but the next three junior varsity fill-ins recorded two outs and a walk. Austin Baldwin stepped to the plate representing the tying run but struck out to strand two runners and end the game.

The silver lining of the affair was that Nevada hung with Carthage without the luxury of four of its most experienced players. The Tigers will offer a different look in the first round of district Monday at Carthage with its full lineup available.
