Class 4A Regional Tennis Tournament

Hosted by Fort Scott High School

Thursday, 10 a.m., FSHS and city pool courts

Teams in the field: Fort Scott, Chanute, Iola, Ottawa and Parsons.

Schedule: First-round play is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with singles play at the high school and doubles at the pool courts. Semifinals and finals in both singles and doubles will be held at the high school. Semifinals are expected to begin at 1 p.m. with the finals beginning around 3:30.

Fort Scott versus the lot: The Tigers faced Iola in two round-robin tournaments and the Southeast Kansas League Tournament, going 2-0 in the duals. Fort Scott faced Chanute in one round-robin and in the SEK tourney, losing the dual. The Tigers have not met Ottawa or Parsons.

What's at stake: The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to Friday's Class 4A Sub-State Tournament at Independence. The top four finishers at Independence go on to the Class 4A State Tournament at Prairie Village.

A first: The Regional level was new to Class 4A last season. The smaller field makes it possible for more schools to host post-season play because not as many courts are needed. Fort Scott, thus, is playing host to a post-season tennis tournament for the first time. "We would like to invite everyone to come out and see some exciting high-school tennis action in the first step toward qualifying for this year's State Tournament," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said.

One difference: During the regular season, there are No. 1 and No. 2 brackets in both singles and doubles. In post-season play, all the singles players and all the doubles players are in one bracket, meaning it's possible for teammates to play each other somewhere along the way, possibly for the championship.

Who to root for: Going by the line-up that's been used in the past couple of tournaments, Stephen Buntain and Colton Grillott will be the singles entrants and Dustin Willard and Jeff Johnson will be one doubles team with Brian Gorman and Gabe Quick being the other....Buntain has a 23-7 season record and placed third in No. 1 singles at last week's SEK tourney. He's won his only match against Chanute and is 1-2 against Iola's Kent Toland, who finished second in the SEK. Buntain and Toland will probably be seeded on opposite sides of the bracket...Grillott is 8-13 on the season. He's played some doubles as well but has beaten Chanute and Iola opponents in the only singles matches he's had against them....Willard/Johnson have only been paired together in three tournaments and are 4-7 together. They are 1-0 versus Iola and 0-1 versus Chanute....Quick and Gorman are 15-11 together, finishing third in No. 2 doubles in the SEK tourney. They have had one match each against Iola and Chanute entrants, winning both....

Weather: It's expected to be hot and windy today, so if you decide to attend the tournament -- and especially if you go to the high school courts -- have some shade or sunscreen ready as there isn't a lot of shade....Thunderstorms could develop if the tournament goes very far into the evening hours but aren't likely to pop up before 6 p.m.....
