Fort Scott High School's softball team won its sixth and seventh straight games as it swept a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader from Labette County Tuesday at Don Hewett Field.
The Tigers won game one 13-0 as Erica Davis threw a no-hitter, the second one by a Fort Scott pitcher this season. The second victory was harder to come by as it took nine innings for the Tigers to come away with a 5-4 win.
The sweep improved the Tigers' record to 7-1 in the SEK and 10-2 overall, setting up a key battle for first place today at Columbus. The Titans are unbeaten in both league play and overall (10-0, 11-0) coming off a 11-1, 9-2 sweep of Chanute on Tuesday. The Fort Scott-Columbus doubleheader has determined the league champion two of the last three seasons.
Davis' no-hitter was punctuated with 11 strikeouts while she walked only one batter. because the game was called after five innings due to the run rule, only five of the 16 batters she faced did not strike out.
Erin Coffman, Hannah Hawkins, Afton Gray, Jamie Collins and Elise Nation all had two hits each for the Tigers. Coffman, who had a double and a triple, drove in three runs. Hawkins and Nation, each of whom had triples, drove in two runs each. Collins also drove in two runs.
Davis also drove in two runs to help her own cause. Joce Allen stole three bases.
Davis (7-1) also moved into the circle to pitch the second game starting with the third inning. She allowed one run on three hits but walked only one while striking out 14.
Gray led the Tiger offense as she went three for five with a double and a triple. She scored two runs. Hawkins and Simpson were each two for five. Hawkins belted two doubles.
Labette County fell to 2-8, 5-7.
NOTES -- Simpson has the Tigers' other no-hitter this season. She walked six and struck out 14 in Fort Scott's 8-0 run over Parsons in the first round of the Tigers' home tournament on March 25....
The Tigers' 13 runs in the opener matched their season high, which they also had in both games of a sweep at Parsons on April 22. Coincidentally, the score of each of those games was 13-0....
The Tigers host Pittsburg (6-2, 8-4) at 4:30 Friday. The Purple Dragons will play at Independence today....
