Fort Scott Hurricanes parent meeting set for May 7

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

The Fort Scott Hurricanes summer swimming team is preparing for the 2008 season. The Hurricanes are members of the Southeast Kansas Swimming League with Chanute, Coffeyville, Erie, Humboldt, Independence, Iola and Cherryvale and have won the league title six years in a row, going undefeated each time.

Dual meets are held on Wednesday evenings in June and July with the league championship meet held on the fourth Saturday in July.

The Hurricanes use the Fort Scott city pool for practices and home meets. The first practice will be held May 27.

There are six age levels: Six-and-under, 7-8 year-olds, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18. Events for ages 10 and under are generally 25 yards or one pool length while the older swimmers swim at least 50 yards.

It is not necessary for swimmers to know the strokes before trying out for the Hurricanes. All they need to do is be able to get across the pool by themselves one time, have a desire to learn the strokes, be willing to try and not have a fear of the water.

The head coach again this season will be Tim Free. The assistant coach will be Jared Leek.

Parents or swimmers who would like more information are encouraged to attend the parent information meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 7 at Buck Run Community Center, 735 Scott Ave. If you would like more information before the meeting or can not attend the meeting, contact Deb Halsey at (620) 223-3830.
