Mapleton Homecoming June 14--15

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

April's community breakfast was hosted by the Mapleton Methodist Church. The Mapleton Singers graced all with their outstanding talent. Everyone enjoyed a bountiful breakfast. The Mapleton Methodist Church, the Mapleton Christian Church and the Community of Christ each take turns hosting this community breakfast, which is open to all in the community. The Mapleton Christian Church will host the May community breakfast on Mother's Day, May 11 at 9 am. You do not have to attend one of these churches to be welcome.

If you have transportation issues, please contact Linda at (620) 743-5101 and a ride will be provided for you. If you feel more comfortable bringing a dish for you or your family, we will welcome it, but please don't let this keep you away-there is always enough food to go around.

Thirty Mapleton Red Hat Ladies met at the Mapleton C-Store April 18th. Some of the items for discussion were the Purpleation for Donnie and Irene. What's a Purleation, you say? It's like a reduation, but for those young ladies turning 80. Now they can wear

Purple hats or red hats or pink if they like. As a matter of fact, if you get to 80, you can wear any color hat you please. The Purpleation was scheduled for Sunday April 20th at the Lions House in Fort Scott between 2:30 and 4:30. Since the time has past, as of this writing, the party was great. Twenty one ladies all decked out to the nines ate cake and mints and drank a variety of teas. Facts and stories from the past were shared about Donnie and Irene-we'll leave it at that. Donnie will be 80 in May and Irene is a bit younger-she won't turn 80 till December. They look great for 80!

The Red Hat weekend is scheduled for the 4th weekend in June, so you know what that means lots of planning. The planning meeting was the 24th of April and there will be more details on the outcome of that meeting later. This June weekend is also the Mapleton Yard Sale event-so mark your calendars.

Also on Thursday a few of the ladies met at the Fort Scott Community College for a women's appreciation lunch. Helen informed the group that she has planned another New Theatre trip in Kansas City for August 6th. Let's go see "ELVIS". Get your tickets early-just $28.50. Contact Helen Long for more details. Also, Helen told the group about plans for two other shows next year-yes, next year-the tickets sell out that fast.

The group was also informed that there was to be a surprise party for Joe Rei at the Community Center on the 25th and following that was a Gospel Sing at the Community of Christ Church in Fort Scott.

Some of the ladies belong to the Mapleton Community Chorus, which meets on the 1st Friday of the month 7-8:15 and treats are served. If you can sing or not, come join in the fun.

Mapleton Homecoming is not far off-June 14 and 15. The Red Hat Ladies will be all dressed up for the parade. Come see what all the fuss and feathers is about.

Mapleton Homecoming has lots to offer with a tractor pull, horse pull, auction and more!

One of the ladies sent around an e-mail she received concerning the wearing of red on Fridays in remembrance of all our military serving at home and overseas.

The next meeting of the Mapleton Red Hats will be May 16th at 6:30 pm at the Mapleton C-Store. Come join the fun.

Mapleton is shaking the ground-literally. A new arena is being built and a new concession stand is being donated. The funds to help with this project are coming from a panel program. A person or organization can purchase a panel with a memorial or business name or the like for $100. Contact any of the city council for more information.

The Homecoming meeting was held April 20th at the Community Center to discuss upcoming events for the June 14 and 15 weekend. Flyers will be coming out with all the details.

As you can see there's always something happening in Mapleton. Come join us for any or all of the events listed. If you have information to be included in this news column, please contact Linda at (620) 743-5101.
