Nevada, Fort Scott visit Girard for 24 team track meet

GIRARD, Kan. -- Fort Scott and Nevada both took part in the Girard Optimist Club Relays at Frank Jameson Field here Friday, the largest regular-season competition hosted by a high school in Southeast Kansas with 24 schools attending this season.

Fort Scott's girls finished in third place. Baldwin, a traditional power from Northeast Kansas, won the meet with 11 points followed by host Girard with 102 and Fort Scott with 82 1/2, two points ahead of fourth-place Joplin.

Nevada's girls finished in seventh place with 46 1/2 points, 12 1/2 behind Southeast Conference rival Carthage and 11 1/2 back of Labette County (Kan.).

Joplin won the boys' side of the meet with 123 1/2 points followed by Pittsburg with 113, Carthage 96, Girard 73, Baldwin 61 and Fort Scott in sixth with 48 1/2 points. Nevada scored 28 points to finish eighth, six points behind Labette County and one ahead of Pittsburg Colgan.

Despite the depth of the field, both Fort Scott and Nevada had multiple girls' winners. Fort Scott saw Tiffnie Bradley win discus with a mark of 107 feet, 5 1/2 inches. Breianna Jones won two events, taking the triple jump with a mark of 35-4 and winning the 400-meter dash in 1:02.26.

Nevada's Mariah Mock won the 200-meter dash in 27.04 seconds, just ahead of Fort Scott's Jones. She was also the anchor for Nevada's wining 4x100-meter relay team, which turned in a time of 51.78 seconds.

Fort Scott had one boys' winner, Grant Hartman, who won javelin by 6 1/2 inches with his effort of 157-6.

The highest finishes for Nevada boys' were three third-place marks. Trevor Hinkle was third in the 800 meters in 2:05.82 and the 1,600 in 4:49. Tyler Werner was third in pole vault, clearing 12-6.

Fort Scott's track team goes to Burlington Tuesday afternoon.
