'Hounds complete suspended game, win 15th straight

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Fort Scott Community College's baseball team has had to scramble a little bit to get some games in with all the rain that fell overnight.

Wednesday, the Greyhounds were scheduled to play Hutchinson, the second-place team in the Jayhawk Conference-Western Division, in a non-conference doubleheader. But, according to FSCC head coach Chris Moddelmog, it started to rain almost as soon as the 'Hounds got there. The games were, of course, cancelled.

Thursday, the Greyhounds were originally scheduled to go to Independence for a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division twinbill but the field at Independence was too wet to play on.

Instead, the teams played those final few innings of the suspended game from April 8 at Lions Park. In about 40 minutes, Moddelmog said, the Greyhounds were able to finish up a 6-2 win over the Pirates.

That was Fort Scott's 15th consecutive victory, bringing it within two games of division-leading Cowley. Both teams have four conference games remaining.

The 'Hounds (23-9 in the East, 33-16 overall) will play their final home games of the season at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lions Field against Allen County. The games will be important for the Red Devils as they may still be fighting for fourth place in the Eastern Division, which would get them home-field advantage in the first round of the Region VI Tournament. Finishing fifth would force Allen to go on the road and face one of the top-four West teams.

The Greyhounds will need some help if they are going to have a shot to overtake Cowley (25-7, 30-16) for the division title. Since the Tigers have swept Fort Scott in the season series, the 'Hounds would have to win at least three of their four remaining games while Cowley would have to lose all four.

Cowley was scheduled to play Neosho County Thursday at Chanute but the field there was unplayable. The Tigers will make up an earlier postponed doubleheader at Coffeyville Saturday and then go to Chanute to play Neosho County Sunday.

Fort Scott has secured home-field advantage in the first round as it can't finish lower than fourth place. But the 'Hounds can finish anywhere from first to fourth depending on the outcome of other games.
