Loren R. Martin, 84, LaHarpe, formerly of Fort Scott, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the Moran Manor. He was born September 29, 1923, in Cherokee, Ok., to Ralph and Nora Mae (Brown) Martin.

He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He farmed and worked for his parents in Cherokee, Ok., in their Massey Ferguson dealership unitl moving to Fort Scott in 1960. He worked as a carpenter and farmed until moving to Iola in 1971. He worked as a carpenter and then for Gates Rubber Co. until he retired.

He married Maxine (Hibbs) Laver in Iola on Feb. 11, 1972.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Martin, of the home, one son, Loren Martin and wife Patty, Girard; two daughters, Maryn Wiggins and Sharry Rains and husband Ron, both of Fort Scott; one step-son Gene Laver and wife Glenda, Moran. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 9 step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Larry and Kenneth, and a stepson, Everett Laver.

Rev. Lloyd W. Houk will conduct graveside services at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, at the Maple Grove Cemetery, east of Humboldt. Family and friends will meet at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola, at 10 a.m. Friday, April 11, for a short time of visitation before leaving for the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel, Iola, is in charge of arrangements.
