Greyhounds split pair of weekend doubleheaders

Monday, April 7, 2008

Fort Scott Community College's baseball teams split a pair of Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheaders on the road last weekend but managed to stay in fourth place in the division.

The top eight teams in the Eastern and Western divisions qualify for the Region VI Tournament. The top four teams in each division get to host a best-of-three first-round series.

The Greyhounds (11-9 in the division, 19-16 overall) won Friday's opener at Allen County, 4-0, but lost the second game, 3-2. On Saturday, Neosho County took the opener 10-0 but Fort Scott won game two 2-1.

Allen County (12-10, 19-15), which split with second-place Johnson County Saturday, is percentage points behind Fort Scott for fourth place. Independence (10-10, 15-16) is in sixth place, one game behind Fort Scott and KCK. Coffeyville (9-13, 9-17) is three games out of the last home-field spot while Neosho County (6-12, 17-15) is four behind.

Coffeyville swept Labette Sunday and Neosho County Saturday. Neosho County was also swept by Kansas City Friday.

Friday: Fort Scott 4-2, Allen County 0-3.

At Iola, Dan Huff allowed seven hits but no walks and no runs in a complete-game effort for the 'Hounds in the opener.

Fort Scott saw seven players get one hit each. Zach Caldwell drove in two runs.

The second game was decided in the bottom of the seventh as Allen County broke a 2-2 tie with nobody out.

Jason Houston had two hits for the Greyhounds. Andrew Minnich drove in two runs.

Joel Ricketts also pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four.

Saturday: Neosho County 10-1, Fort Scott 0-2.

Neosho County scored at least two runs in each of the first four innings of the opener. Ironically, the Panthers were outscored 38-13 in the other five games they played over the weekend.

In the second game, Minnich's two-run home run gave the Greyhounds all the runs they needed. He went two for three at the plate.

Adam Johnston allowed five hits and one walk while striking out five as he went the distance.

The Greyhounds host Independence in a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. today, then go to Highland Thursday.
