Community prayer breakfast date set

The Fort Scott Kiwanis Pioneers Club has set Thursday, May 1, for this year's Community Prayer Breakfast to be held in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer. Event organizer Marilyn Landers and her committee chose this year's theme, "Prayer -- America's Strength and Shield." The event is co-sponsored by the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Scott Ministerial Alliance. The event will be held at the Fort Scott Community College cafeteria, and meal will be provided courtesy of Cheney Witt Funeral Chapel.

More details will be made available as plans for the event are finalized.

According to Kiwanis Pioneers President Gina Holt, this year the club will support the Bourbon County Health Department disaster drill to take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Fort Scott Middle School. Public Health Nurse Alice Maffett is required to conduct this drill to ensure that the Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department can dispense needed medications to residents in emergency situations.

Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Honoring that defining statement, Kiwanis Pioneers, the local all-women chapter, helps many individuals and organizations in the community. With funds raised through their annual Kiwanis Pioneers Chili Feed each November, the club financially helps Mother-to-Mother Ministries, Healthy Start, Reading is Fundamental programs in all three Bourbon County elementary schools, Project Art at Fort Scott Middle School, band and orchestra programs at Fort Scott High School, the Bourbon County Coalition, the local chapter of the Back Pack Food Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), as well as helping fund participants in the Girls State leadership program .

Kiwanis Pioneers also works with Bert Lewis and Fort Scott High School Key Club members to instill an attitude of service and pride in the community.

Holt said, "Our local chapter of 35 members is serving our community in many and diverse capacities. You will see our members helping at Good Ol' Days and serving lunch at Airport Day."
