Tigers second at Spring Hill tourney

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

SPRING HILL -- Stephen Buntain's first-place finish in No. 1 singles helped lead Fort Scott to a second-place finish at the Spring Hill Tournament here Tuesday.

Buntain won all three matches in his division, losing only three of 27 games, improving to 8-3 on the season in the progress.

Buntain defeated Ben Atwell of Spring Hill and Levi Moore of Baldwin by 8-0 scores. He also beat Lansing's Dan Mikousic an 8-3 score.

"Stephen played excellent tennis today," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "He was in control throughout his matches and played aggressively but with patience. He was very focused and is continuing to improve with each tournament."

Lansing won the team title with 11 points. Fort Scott was next in the four-team field with seven. Spring Hill was third with four points and Baldwin rounded out team scores with two points.

"We continued to show improvement today," Barr said. "It was nice to step out of league play and see some different competition today. Baldwin and Spring Hill are both similar to us this year, not a lot of returning varsity experience, and Lansing had a good team so it was a good test for us."

Gabe Quick and Brian Gorman (3-4) finished second in No. 2 doubles. They defeated Sam Warner/Josh Smith of Spring Hill, 8-3, and Sam Cooper/Tim Larson of Baldwin, 8-2. Lansing's Mutin DePaolis/Niklas Wagnor took an 8-2 win.

"Gabe and Brian also are showing improvement with each match," Barr noted. "They played some excellent tennis at times today and as they continue to improve and become more consistent, they should develop into an excellent doubles team. These two are both doing a great job for two first-year players."

Jeff Johnson played his first varsity match. The first-year senior placed third, beating Baldwin's Brandon Baltzell, 8-0. He lost to Spring Hills Mason Fourtney, 8-3, and Lansing's Clayton Hall, 8-1.

"He is still learning the game but is showing more and more improvement each day," Barr said.

Josh Grant and Dustin Willard (2-5) were third in No. 1 singles. They beat Baldwin's Camdon Schwartz/McKinley Dick, 8-2, and lost against Spring Hill's Nick Gilliland/Shane Hollern, 8-6, and Lansing's Mo Moyer/Ezra Carpenter, 8-2.

"Josh and Dustin played some excellent tennis at times and at times made some errors that hurt them," Barr said. "They are showing signs of developing into a very good doubles team, but just need to play at that higher level throughout the entire match and the entire tournament."

The Tigers are scheduled to compete in Pittsburg today -- weather permitting -- on the Pittsburg State University courts and again at the Labette County Invitational at Parsons on Tuesday.
