Former Quincy resident, Meta Pickett, died on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in Kennewick, Wash. where she lived at the Charbonneau Retirement Center the past two years. Meta was preceded in death by Howard, her husband of 61 years, on Feb. 17, 2008.
Meta was born in Fulton, Kan. on June 13, 1920, to Leta and John Barnett. She was raised on a farm and put in charge of the horses when she was six years old. During high school Meta excelled in math and basketball. After graduation, she married Chet Lee in 1938 and had a daughter, Saundra Sue. Chet, an U.S. Air Force pilot was killed in World War II. In 1946 she married Howard Pickett and had two children, Linda and Tom. In 1957 they moved from Fulton, Kan. to Quincy with their three children.
As an active member of the Presbyterian Church since 1958, Meta taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and helped wherever it was needed. She worked 14 years at Rainer National Bank until retirement in 1982. She was an excellent seamstress who customized her daughters' clothes and formals. After retirement she took up painting, golf, and often helped at Habitat for Humanity. Meta was also a member of Quincy Eastern Star since 1957.
Meta is survived by her daughters, Sandee Kirkwood of Ridgefield, Wash. and Linda Pearson of Dallas, Texas, and son Tom Pickett of Richland, Wash. She has seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held at the Quincy First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
