Greyhounds swept at Cowley, fall into fourth place

Monday, March 31, 2008

ARKANSAS CITY -- Fort Scott Community College's baseball team had chances to win both games of a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader against Cowley here Saturday.

Instead, the Greyhound bullpen was unable to hold late leads and division-leading Cowley was able to pull off a sweep with identical 7-6 scores in each game.

Cowley (15-3 in the East, 18-11 overall) remains two games ahead of second-place Johnson County (13-5, 18-10). The Greyhounds (8-6 in the East, 16-13 overall) fell a game behind Allen County (10-6, 14-12) and into fourth place. The top four teams in the East at the end of regular-season play earn home-field advantage in the first-round of the Region VI Playoffs.

The Greyhounds led the first game 6-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. But the Tigers scored five in the bottom of the inning.

In game two, the 'Hounds scored in each of the first five innings and held a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. But the Tigers scored five times in the bottom half of that inning and scored two more in the sixth.

Fort Scott had 11 hits in the opener. Zach Caldwell, Brandt Barnes, Trevor Geist and Cullen Baxter each had two hits. Barnes drove in two runs while Baxter scored twice.

In game two, Fort Scott had seven hits. Andrew Minnich had two hits, one of which was a double. Zach Higgins scored two runs.

The Greyhounds take on Johnson County this afternoon at Overland Park for another conference doubleheader. They had to Allen County for another conference twinbill Thursday.

NOTES -- FSCC has made some changes to its schedule. Instead of playing the Rockhurst JV at Kansas City, Mo., Wednesday and then at home April 7, the Greyhounds will play only on the 7th. But that doubleheader will be at Rockhurst.

Additionally, with the Fort Scott-Kansas City Kansas doubleheaders switching locations, the Greyhounds will face the Red Devils in Kansas City on April 17 instead of at Lions Field....
