Varsity girls win opening meet; boys fourth at LCHS

ALTAMONT -- Fort Scott High's varsity girls' track team won the team title at the Labette County Invitational here Friday, which was the opening meet of the season for most of the teams here, including the Tigers.

Fort Scott's boys placed fourth in team standings. Tiger junior varsity teams also competed here with the girls finishing sixth and the boys ninth. There were 10 schools in all four divisions.

This is the only time this season that the varsity and JV will be in the same location on the same day.

Fort Scott's varsity girls won four events and 14 total medals on their way to scoring 97 points. Girard was second with 84 points followed by Iola with 71 1/2.

Breianna Jones won three individual events. She took the 100 meters in 12.89 seconds, the 200 in 26.83 and the triple jump at 33 feet, 8 inches, which was almost 2 1/2 feet better than the second-place team.

The other event winner was Catherine Sercer, who took the 3,200-meter run in 12:50.99. Daisy Jones was second in that event for the Tigers in 14:40.57 and Sercer was second in the 1,600 meters in 6:03.49.

Ashley Cavin won Fort Scott's third and final second-place medal as she went 14' 10 3/4" in long jump, missing first place by a mere 1/4 inch.

The Tigers had three thirds with Brittany Bingesser running the 300-meter hurdles in 54.99, Tiffnie Bradley going 94' 4" in discus and Elizabeth Meech recording a 32' 6 1/4" mark in shot put.

Annie Gladbach placed fourth in javelin at 115' 4". Bingesser was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.42. And the 4x100-meter relay team of Cavin, Jolee Sharp, Kori Page Rienbolt and B.Jones was fourth in 54.20.

Fort Scott's remaining medals were picked up by Cassie Ogran, fifth in shot at 31' 8", and the 4x400 relay of Kaylee Harper, Rienbolt, Bingesser and Sercer, sixth in 4:51.29.

Tiger varsity boys won 12 medals in scoring 61 points. Girard was the winner with 84 points, Labette County was second with 72 points and Chanute was third with 69 points.

Grant Hartman was Fort Scott's only event winner, taking javelin with an effort of 170' 8" while Aaron Judy was third at 151' 2".

Clint Lawrence finished second in shot put at 44' 1 3/4" and discus with a throw of 133' 1".

Alex Barner was third in high jump after tie-breakers with a jump of six feet even and in triple jump with a mark of 39' 6 1/2".

Jake Clements finished third in the long jump at 18' 6" with Chris Archie fourth in that event at 18' 0 1/4".

Mitchell Stoughton was fifth in the 400-meter dash in 56.49, Clements was fifth in high jump at 5' 8". The 4x400-meter relay team was fifth in 4:01.97.

The final medal was collected by the 4x100-meter relay team, which finished sixth in 47.39.

The Tiger girls' JV also picked up 12 medals. They scored 39 team points. Chanute was the winner with 100 points followed by LCHS with 82 and Independence with 78.

Tiger medalists were as follows:

* -- Ceara Bridgewater was second in discus with an effort of 78 feet even and third in shot put at 27' 8'.

* -- The 4x800 relay team of Megan McDermed, Katelyn Torres, Hali Eads and Leah Cassleman ran a 12:58 in finishing third.

* -- The 4x100 relay with Kori Allen, Caitlin Shorter, Madison Shelden and Megan Midkiff was fourth in 1:02.32.

* -- Alanna Masterson was fourth in javelin at 70' 5".

* -- Shorter finished fourth in the 200 meters in 30.42.

* -- Saber Weekley was fifth in discus at 75' 1".

* -- Morgan Gillispie was sixth in the 400 meters in 1:19.70.

* -- Torres finished sixth in the 800 but her time was not listed on the form provided by LCHS officials to the coaches.

* -- Libby Halsey was sixth in the 1,600 meters in 6:52 and in the 3,200 in 14:58.

* -- The 4x400 relay team of McDermed, Torres, Shorter and Midkiff ran a 5:16.66 in placing sixth.

Fort Scott's boys junior varsity won five medals and scored 18 team points. Iola was the meet champion with 102 1/2 points.

* -- Josh Boller won the 1,600 meters as he ran a 5:15.12 and won by a little over two seconds.

* -- Drew Bryant was fourth in shot put with a mark of 33' 9 1/2".

* -- The 4x800-meter relay team finished fifth in 10:32.84.

* -- Jordan Karleskint ran the 800 meters in 2:28.03 in finishing sixth.

* -- The 4x400 relay team was also sixth in 4:10.36.

The Tiger junior varsity will compete at Chanute on April 7 and in Pleasanton on April 8.
