Uniontown plays first baseball, softball games

Monday, March 31, 2008

ERIE -- Thursday afternoon, Uniontown High School created a little bit of school history.

For the first time since about the middle 1960's, UHS played a baseballl game and, for the first time ever, the school had an interscholastic softball game.

The softball team fell in the first game of a triangular to Erie, 17-2. In their second game, the Eagles lost to Humboldt, a Class 2-1A State Tournament qualifier last season, 14-1. No statistics were available from the games.

Baseball, meanwhile, won its first game, a 7-5 win over Erie. Luke Spainhoward pitched a complete game, allowing 12 hits and five walks but also striking out 11.

Uniontown had nine hits. Senior catcher Shawn Pritchett and junior Koltan Schaaf each had two.

In the second game, Uniontown took a 21-8 loss to Humboldt. The Eagles were able to keep up in the first two innings, trailing only 8-6 after the Cubs scored seven of their runs in the top of the first inning.

Spainhoward had three of Uniontown's 13 hits in that game, including a double. Pritchett had two hits.

Both squads will play St. Paul Thursday. The baseball dpubleheader will be played in Bronson while the softball twinbill will be held in St. Paul.
