Greyhound baseball sweeps Coffeyville

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott Community College's baseball team kept it's hold on third place in the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division with a 6-4, 13-3 sweep of Coffeyville here Tuesday.

The Greyhounds (7-3 in the East, 15-10 overall) are ahead of fourth-place Independence (9-5, 14-10) on percentage points. Cowley (11-3, 14-11) leads the East with Johnson County one game behind (10-4, 14-9).

The Greyhounds play at Kansas City Kansas today then go to Cowley Saturday and to Johnson County Tuesday. The Greyhounds were swept by Cowley at home earlier this month while Johnson County posted a split at Lions Park two weeks ago.

The Greyhounds trailed 4-1 after four innings of the first game with Coffeyville (5-9, 5-13) threatening to increase the margin in the bottom of the fifth. But, FSCC head coach Chris Moddelmog said, the 'Hounds got out of a first-and-third, nobody out situation.

In the top of the sixth, the Greyhounds exploded for four runs to take the lead for good. Trevor Geist hit his fifth home run of the season the seventh for good measure.

"The guys really stayed with it for seven innings and found a way to win today," Moddelmog said.

Fort Scott had nine hits, two each from Brandt Barnes, Jason Houston and Geist. Barnes stole two bases.

Ryan Daniel (3-2) pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four.

Fort Scott scored eight runs over the first two innings of the second game, which was halted after six innings by the run rule, and never had much of a problem after that. Barnes and Daniel each had two hits. Of Fort Scott's 10 safeties, four were doubles.

Daniel also drove in four runs while Zach Caldwell and Cullen Baxter each had two RBIs.

Dan Huff (3-0) pitched the first five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out five. Adam Johnston pitched the last inning, allowing one hit.
