Bourbon County Unit of Retired school personnel

Wednesday, March 19, 2008
The Bourbon County Unit of Retired School Personnel met March 8, 2008. The High School building was locked, so the group went to the Southern Baptist Church. Marge Stringer opened the church and made coffee. The social committee, Winifred Daly and Wayne Stringer furnished donuts.

The president, Margaret Titus, led the group in the Lord's Prayer and the salute to the American flag.

The Secretary's report of the February meeting was read. The treasurer reported a balance of $345.29. The CD is now $485.17.

Bob Casino gave a report on what is going on at the state level. He announced that there will be several workshops across the state for new officers to become informed. He reminded us to call our state representative urging her to vote for the COLA.

Margaret Titus, president, read a letter from the Beacon telling how many people were given assistance last year. Over $3000 was realized from the recent soupline.

Margaret introduced Don Miller who spoke on "Hell's Bend Mystery Solved." This concerned Engine #99, racing at the speed of 18 miles an hour. It came upon a landslide causing the train to end up in the river. There are many interesting stories about the accident, each different. In 1911, the engine was scrapped with the use of a blow torch. Local residents have several pictures of the smoke stack in the river.

The May 9 meeting will be at the Lyon's Mansion.
