Mary O. Gardner, 90, of Arcadia, died at 8:25 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott.
Mrs. Gardner was born on January 29, 1918, in rural Hallowell, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur and Doris Hackney Swearingin. Mary was a homemaker who also worked as a telephone operator in Arcadia, the Census Bureau in Pittsburg, and along with her husband owned and operated the Arcadia Cafe. She attended Oswego Grade School and graduated from Columbus High School in 1935.
Mary married Orin R. Gardner on May 30, 1937 at Columbus, Kansas. Mr. Gardner proceded her in death April 9, 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara S. Scott, Fort Scott and Judy Rawlings and her husband John of Liberal, Missouri, two sisters, Opal Overman and Doris Mae Ekhoff both of Oswego, two brothers, Herb Swearingin of Simi Valley, California and Bill Swearingin of Dewey Oklahoma, a sister-in-law, Barbara Swearingin of Lombard, Illiniois, three grandchildren, Ed Scott of Fort Scott, Jason Rawlings of Girard, and Janelle Rawlings of Joplin, Missouri, and two great grandchildren, Rachel and Emily Rawlings of Girard. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, David Swearingin, and infant brother, and an infant sister.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the Mckee Cemetery at Hallowell, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma where friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday at the Bedene Chapel. The family suggests memorials be left to the McKee Cemetery Fund. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.
