Roughriders bounce Greyhounds

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Crowder pitcher Alex Peters threw 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball to help her Roughriders to a 9-2 win over Fort Scott Community College in a non-league softball game at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex Thursday afternoon.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader wasn't played after cloud-to-ground lightning began striking around the area.

Peters would have had a perfect game going but for the fact that her center fielder dropped Sam Hays' line drive in the top of the fourth inning. She ended up going the distance, allowing one earned run on three hits and no walks while striking out 10.

Fort Scott pitcher Lindsay Boham was able to match Peters' effort in the first two innings. But Crowder scored four runs in the top of the third on six hits, added an unearned run in the fourth with the aid of two Greyhound errors, and put up four more in the sixth on five hits.

Fort Scott (1-8) got both its runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sarah Doyle doubled to left with two outs. Then Hays singled and moved up to second on a bad throw back to the infield as the 'Riders tried to get Doyle at the plate.

Emily True followed up with a single to left to score Hays with Fort Scott's second run.

The Greyhounds also got two on with one out in the seventh on two Crowder errors. But Peters got a strikeout, then a groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Doyle, Hays and True had Fort Scott's only hits. Crowder's Jamie Reynolds went three for four, driving in four and scoring twice. Olivia Baldwin and Hollee Statham were each three for four. Baldwin scored three times while Statham scored twice.

Jessica Marble was two for four for Crowder, driving in three runs. The Roughriders had a total of 14 hits.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to participate in a tournament in Broken Arrow, Okla., this Saturday and Sunday. Fort Scott will play Eastern Oklahoma State, Garden City and Coffeyville in pool play on Saturday before going into bracket play Sunday.

The Greyhounds will have spring break off next week. They will return to action on March 25 with a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division road doubleheader at Johnson County.
