MORAN -- Uniontown's girls outscored rival Marmaton Valley in the fourth quarter, 10-3, to rally and steal a Humboldt Class 2A Sub-State Tournament first-round game on the Wildcats' home floor here Tuesday night.

The Eagles, the No. 5 seed, trailed 23-21 going into the final stanza of a playoff doubleheader with each schools' boys' team.

Jill Hartman led Marmaton Valley (5-15) with 10 points but the Eagles (5-15) contained her somewhat as she made only two of 17 shots from the field. Only four other Wildcats scored -- all of them scoring four points each.

Meanwhile, Breanna Esslinger led Uniontown by collecting a double-double. She scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Abbie Smith added 10 points.

"Abbie pretty much shut down Hartman," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "Breanna and Katie (Spainhoward) dominated the boards.

"Although we didn't shoot very well (eight of 40 from the field), we did hit some key free throws down the stretch."

Spainhoward's nine caroms helped Uniontown finish with a 35-18 rebounding advantage.

Marmaton Valley made only nine of 42 shots from the field (21 percent), which included a one-for-seven night from three-point range.

Uniontown will face Pittsburg Colgan, the top seed, in one of Thursday night's semifinals at Humboldt. Colgan (14-6) downed Yates Center, 63-21, in its first-round game Monday.

The other semifinal pits No. 3 Oswego (9-12) against No. 2 Humboldt (11-10). The order of the semifinals will be officially determined later but, more often than not, the home team plays the second game.

Uniontown's boys (11-9) were eliminated from the tournament after losing to third-seeded Marmaton Valley (17-3) by a score of 46-23. No other details from this game were available as the Tribune went to press.
