Arcadians bid farewell to old friends, welcome new ones

On Sunday Feb. 17, the theme in Arcadia Christian Church was God honors humble service. Both the Sunday School Lesson and Pastor DAvid's sermon were taken from Luke 14. The birthday song was dedicated to Carole Garrison, Delton Watt Jr. Allyson Dugan, Chelsea Due, Mitzi Shead and Tara Van Leeuwen.

Announcements were made for Preaching-Teaching Convention at OCC in Joplin, Mo. Feb. 18-20; JOY Dinner, Monday, FEb 18, 6 p.m. and

Class No.10 at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, in Arcadia.

Special guests on Sunday morning were Lofton Younge, Arcadia; Kelly Reeves,who recently moved into the former Doris Stelle home and Mac Steele from Salina, Kan.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, Jack and Harriett Corporon arrived in Arcadia after attending the annual Journalism Convention at University of Kansas in Lawrence.

They, with Mary V. Shead, visited Bill Dobbins in Frontenac and all enjoyed dinner at Applebees in Pittsburg. A celebration of the Corporons' 51st wedding was enjoyed by all four at Braum's

On Sunday, the three from Arcadia spent the day with their brother Mick and Eloise Corporon in their new assisted living apartment in College View Manor, Joplin, Mo. Their noon meal was enjoyed at Cheddars. Before returning to Arcadia, Mary V. Shead visited her classmates, Juanita and Owen McWilliams, in the same complex.

Lou and Betty Dehn enjoyed their special Valentine Dinner on Feb. 14 in the Kress Tea Room in Fort Scott. A group of Red Hat Ladies were also there that evening.

June Gazaway, graduate of AHS in 1936, was quoted in the Morning Sun as saying her idea of a Good Valentine Date was to put on perfume and cologne and go out on a date. Going to a concert would be great when they play ed big-band music like the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

In memory of Forrest Berkey's mother, Evelyn Kerstetter, they presented flowers on Sunday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pittsburg. At noon the Berkey's dinner guest at Kentucky Fried Chicken was their friend, Cameron Ecton of Pittsburg.

Margaret Emily Corporon Wickstrom, 85, sister to Mary V. Shead, died in Speciality hospital in Edmond, Okla. early Friday morning, Feb. 15, 2008 with daughter Peggy Wickstrom at her side. Her sister, Port Hughes, had spent the afternoon with her on Wednesday before. Cremation and burial beside her husband, Clarence Wickstrom, was in Edmond. A memorial service in the future will be announced later.

Cora Mae Ridgway Headley, 86, died Wednesday Feb. 13, 2008, at Mercy Hospital, Fort Scott. She was born and raised in Arcadia, Kan. and attended grade school with some of us old timers. She had several brothers and sisters and was the last of her family. Her parents were David and Rosa Ridgway. Friends send sympathy to the family.
