Uniontown boys beat Midway; girls' rally falls short

Friday, February 15, 2008

BUFFALO -- Uniontown's boys pummeled Altoona-Midway in the second half of a Three Rivers League make-up basketball contest here last night, outscoring the Jets 32-6 in the second half on the way to a 59-26 victory.

The homestanding Jets outscored the Eagles 17-8 in the second period of the girls' contest and held on for a 36-34 win.

Travis Aikins led Uniontown's boys (5-2 in the TRL, 10-7 overall) with 15 points followed by Drew Johnson with 14 and Seth Bloesser with 12.

The Eagles' lead over the last-place Jets (0-7, 2-16) was just 27-20 at the half.

"Our kids came out a little sluggish," Uniontown head coach Nathan Hinrichs said. "But they really played well in the second half to pull away."

Altoona-Midway girls 36, Uniontown 34.

The Eagles (0-7, 3-14) outscored the Jets (4-3, 11-7) in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome that second quarter.

"They made a run late in the second which really hurt," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "But we fought back and got it tied late in the game. We had two chances with less than a minute and got good looks. They just wouldn't go in."

Katie Spainhoward led the Eagles with eight points. She also had nine rebounds.

Kaylee Leck scored 13 points for the Jets as she made three three-point field goals. Tara Mosburg added 10.

Uniontown won the girls' junior varsity contest, 36-13. Marliss Allen scored eight points for the Eagles.

Uniontown hosts Crest tonight in their Homecoming games.
