Tigers will not play tonight

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

It's hard to get around when there's sleet and ice on the ground but that might not stop some area basketball games from taking place even though some schools didn't have classes this morning.

Just before the Tribune's deadline this morning, Fort Scott High School Athletic Director Larry Fink sent out notice that tonight's scheduled Southeast Kansas League doubleheader at Parsons has been postponed.

It is FSHS policy to avoid traveling on days when there is no school. The Fort Scott-Parsons games will be played Monday, Feb. 18. There will not be any freshmen games at Parsons that night as Fort Scott will be hosting its annual season-ending freshmen tournament.

There are only two weeks left in the regular season for schools in Class 2A and higher. This is also the last week of play for Class 1A schools before they begin a Regional round of post-season play next week, putting a severe scheduling crunch on the Three Rivers League, which has five Class 1A schools: Altoona-Midway, Chetopa, Crest, St. Paul and Southern Coffey County.

Ken Holt, Uniontown girls' basketball coach, called the Tribune shortly after deadline this morning to explain what he understood to the be situation about tonight's originally-scheduled doubleheader at Altoona-Midway.

Earlier this morning, it was said that Marmaton Valley and Altoona-Midway would make up Monday's postponed doubleheader on Thursday. But since then, Holt said, it's been decided that Uniontown will play Altoona-Midway on Thursday instead.

Marmaton Valley will play Chetopa Wednesday night. As far as the Marmaton Valley-Midway doubleheader is concerned, MVHS Athletic Director Mike McEwan explained in an e-mail to the Tribune this afternoon that the two schools will not make up Monday's doubleheader, which had been designated as the one that counted in league play. Instead, the two schools will retroactively count the first meeting, held Jan. 29, as their league games.

Jayhawk-Linn and Pleasanton, located in the northernmost part of the area, will play tonight as scheduled. Jayhawk-Linn will travel to Anderson County for a Pioneer League doubleheader while Pleasanton goes to Southern Coffey County for a TRL twinbill.

Not many other games were scheduled for last night. A doubleheader between Girard and Webb City, Mo., which was to be held at Pittsburg State University was called off. However, the only Pioneer League games on tap -- Prairie View in non-league action at Spring Hill -- were played with Spring Hill posting a sweep.

The following confirmations have been reported concerning other games in area leagues:

* -- Pittsburg at Columbus, a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader, will be played as scheduled tonight.

* -- The Chanute at Coffeyville SEK doubleheader is also still on as scheduled.
