Maxine Smith and Esther Secrest were among those attending the Bourbon County Unit of Retired School Personnel Saturday, Feb. 2, at Fort Scott High School. Fred Campbell was the guest speaker. He gave a very interesting talk about Arch Davenport, a resident of Fort Scott 100 years ago. He was a man ahead of his time and had many irons in the fire. At one time he was editor of The Fort Scott Tribune. He had a club called the Cocklebur Club. You had to be able to shoot a gun to be a member. Another time, he suggested to the Fort Scott school board that they put iron fire escapes on the outside of each school building. They refused, because it was too costly at $5 each. Fred always give the "down to earth" history about the area. Don Miller will tell about "The Mystery of Hell's Bend" at the March 8 meeting at 9:30 a.m. at the high school Any retired school employee is welcome to come and visit with the group.
