Fort Scott (11-2 in the Southeast Kansas League, 12-5 overall) shot 54 percent from the field, making 22 of 41 field-goal attempts, while forcing Chanute (4-8, 6-10) into 26 turnovers -- 11 in the third quarter alone.
The Comets, who lost their fourth straight game, did enjoy a few two-point leads in the first quarter, the last at 12-10, before Kori Page Rienbolt scored two baskets in a row and Elizabeth Meech stuck back her own missed shot as time wound down to make it 16-12 after one.
After Kameron Braman scored to bring Chanute within 21-16 with 5:35 left in the half, Fort Scott scored the final 11 points of the second.
The Tigers would go on to hold Chanute without a field goal for over 18 minutes. Meanwhile, they came out of the locker room and connected on five of their first six shots of the half, making it 43-16 with 4:46 to go.
Chanute's only points of the period came on two Brooke Sharp free throws with 4:05 left, which broke a drought of over nine minutes without a point.
But Fort Scott scored 10 straight to end the third with a 53-18 advantage, which caused the league's 30-point running clock rule to come into effect. Due in part to that rule, Afton Gray's transition layup with 6:55 to go -- which capped Fort Scott's run at 12 straight points -- was the Tigers' last score of the game.
Rienbolt led Fort Scott with 13 points followed by Gray with 12 and Jolee Sharp with 10. Rienboldt and Sharp combined to connect on 11 of 13 shots from the floor.
Braman was Chanute's leading scorer with nine points.
The Blue Comets had just nine field goals in 35 attempts for 26 percent. This was the fourth time this season a Tiger opponent made 10 field goals or fewer.
Fort Scott outrbounded Chanute, 26-25. Hannah Hawkins led the Tigers with six rebounds.
The Tigers committed only 16 turnovers. Sharp picked up eight strals.
Fort Scott handed out 11 assists. Gray and Joce Allen each handed out four.
The Tigers will play their last regular-season home game Tuesday at Parsons' Harold C. Johnson Gymnasium. Tip-off with the Vikings -- who lost to Fort Scott, 54-36, on Jan. 4, should come around 6:15 p.m.
JUNIOR VARSITY -- Brieanna Jones led Fort Scott with 15 points as the Tigers defeated the Blue Comets, 55-24. Jamie Collins added 12 points while Courtney Carpenter and Erin Coffman each added 10.
NOTES -- The 24 points were the fewest allowed by the Tigers this season and marked the fifth time they've held an opponent to fewer than 30 points. It was the fewest they've given up since beating Iola, 26-24, in the league game at Iola last Feb. 16....
The Comets haven't won since defeating Erie in the third-place game of the Wilson County Classic at Fredonia on Jan. 17....
Meanwhile, the Tigers have won 11 of 13 -- with both losses coming to league lader Labette County -- since starting the season 0-3 at the very tough Willard Tri-State Classic....
