Uniontown, Pleasanton split league twinbill

Saturday, February 9, 2008

PLEASANTON, Kan. -- Uniontown and Pleasanton split a Three Rivers League doubleheader here Friday night. Pleas-anton's girls won the opener, 43-32, while Uniontown's boys took the nightcap, 68-47.

The win for Uniontown's boys was big because it keeps alive a slight chance they have to catch Crest in the Three Rivers League race, although they will need some help in doing so. Uniontown (4-2 in the TRL, 9-7 overall) and Crest face each other Friday night at Uniontown.

Crest (6-0, 17-1) won at home against Oswego Friday night. In order for Friday's game to have championship implications, the Eagles need to beat Altoona-Midway while hoping St. Paul can beat Crest Tuesday night.

Because the Three Rivers League is one of the few that breaks ties, if both Uniontown and Crest both finished with two league losses, the Eagles would be declared league champs by themselves.

If Crest wins Tuesday, they will win the TRL crown regardless of what Uniontown does because it would be at least two games ahead with just one league game remaining.

Luke Spainhoward scored a career high 17 points to help the Eagles beat Pleasanton (1-4, 4-13). Jesse Johnston added 13 points and Travis Aikins scored 12.

Pleasanton girls 43, Uniontown 32.

After a low-scoring first half -- Pleasanton led 9-3 after one period and 15-9 at halftime -- the offenses picked up the pace in the second half but not enough for Uniontown (0-3, 3-13) to rally for the win.

Campbell led the Blu-Jays (2-3, 4-13) with 12 points while Megan Allen added 10. The Blu-Jays were credited with 39-percent field-goal shooting as they made 14 of 38 attempts.

Abbie Smith paced the Eagles with nine points while Riley Stephens finished with eight before fouling out. Uniontown shot 25 percent on 14 of 55.

The free-throw line made the difference in this one as Pleasanton converted 12 of 24 chances there while Uniontown was just three of 11.

The Blu-Jays outrebounded the Eagles, 27-22. Smith had five boards for Uniontown.

Riley Stephens was credited with three steals for the Eagles while Candice Clayton dished five assists.

Pleasanton committed 28 turnovers to Uniontown's 23.

In the junior varsity girls' contest, Uniontown picked up a 29-22 win. Katelyn Vincent scored 12 points.

Uniontown's teams play at Altoona-Midway Tuesday while Pleasanton's travel to LeRoy to take on Southern Coffey County the same night. Both are league doubleheaders.

NOTES -- Southern Coffey County's girls clinched the TRL title Friday night with a 70-33 win over Chetopa. The win puts the Titans (7-0, 17-0) one loss ahead of the second-place team, St. Paul. SCC has beaten all four of the top teams -- St. Paul, Midway, Crest and Oswego -- thus holding the tie-breaker over all of them.

St. Paul (5-1, 16-2) defeated Altoona-Midway in a battle for second place, 63-34, Friday night....

In the boys' race, Crest has beaten second-place Marmaton Valley, which has only one league loss and beat Oswego, which had been tied for third with Uniontown, Friday night. Crest downed the Indians, 55-37. Marmaton Valley had the night off and would need to win all its remaining league games while Crest lost both of theirs in order to win the boys' championship....
