Tigers continue strong performance

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott High's girls find themselves in second place after one trip through the Southeast Kansas League's new double-round robin schedule after dominating Coffeyville, 55-25, at Stoner-McClure Gymnasium here Tuesday night.

Coming off Monday's performance in a 62-48 win over Columbus in which they shot 50 percent from the field, the Tigers (7-1 SEK, 8-4 overall) actually improved on that, shooting 52 percent on 22 of 42 Tuesday.

This was the Tigers' seventh straight victory after starting the season 1-4. And they may have looked stronger than they did on Monday.

"They really responded," Fort Scott head coach Jeff Armstrong said. "They've worked hard enough this year that I knew fatigue wasn't going to be a factor."

Fort Scott held the Golden Tornado (2-6, 3-9) without a field goal for the game's first thee minutes while going out to an 8-2 lead.

It was 11-6 with 1:41 to go before Kori Page Rienbolt started a run by converting a three-point play. The Tigers scored the last seven points of the first period and the first 10 of the second.

Rienboldt's layup with seven seconds left made it 36-9 at the half.

"Coffeyville's a really good team, so any time you get out to a lead out quick like that, it's good," Armstrong said. "What I'm really proud about is the turnaround from (Monday) to (Tuesday). We played our game and when you do that, you have a chance to be successful."

The Tiger lead was 48-20 after three. And when the starters scored the first six points of the final stanza in just under a minute, Armstrong pulled the starters. The 30-point running clock rule went into effect at that point.

The Nado may have been worn out as they were playing their fourth game in six days, having hosted their own tournament Thursday through Saturday. The Tigers could have probably claimed fatigue as an excuse, too, going from a home game Monday to a road game Tuesday.

But with the Tiger bench playing well, that doesn't come into play. There weren't a whole lot of points off the bench in this game, but there were assists, steals, rebounds and good defense.

"The bench played very well," Armstrong noted. "Even early in the game, we had eight, nine girls in who really gave us solid minutes. When we get deeper into league play and closer to Sub-State, what can really make a difference is your bench. Brittany (Bingesser) has done a fantastic job and Rachel (Allen) done's a great job giving us some solid minutes and Elizabeth Meech has come in and given us solid pose minutes. And getting good bench play makes it easier for your starters because they know they don't have to do it all."

Afton Gray led the Tigers with 15 points as she made five of seven shots from the field while also dishing out five assists. Rienbolt finished five of nine from the floor and had 12 points. Jolee Sharp contributed nine points as she went four of five and also had five rebounds and four steals. Joce Allen also had nine points on four-of-eight shooting and handed out five assists herself. Meech was the leader in rebounds off the bench with six.

Only one Coffeyville player had more than one field goal or more than three points. That was Megan Bailey, who had two field goals and five points. The Golden Tornado were without leading scorer Kaitlin Overton, who suffered a knee injury during the tournament last week.

Coffeyville made only 10 of 38 field-goal attempts for 26 percent, going three of 18 in the first half. The Nado also turned the ball over 24 times to just 13 for Fort Scott.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Jamie Collins scored 17 points while Brieanna Jones added 15 as the Tigers defeated Coffeyville, 59-28.

FRESHMEN -- The Tigers took a 31-25 win over Coffeyville as Megan McDermed scored nine points and Jenna Campbell scored eight.

Fort Scott hosts Pittsburg Friday night as the second time through the double-round robin schedule begins. The Tigers defeated Pittsburg, coincidentally, by a 55-25 score back on Dec. 4.

The Purple Dragons (0-8, 1-11) held a 29-28 lead at the start of the fourth quarter Tuesday but Iola went on a 13-0 run on its way to a 44-33 win.
