Tigers vanquish Titans in first game since break

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

It was a good way to begin a busy week for Fort Scott High girls on Monday night.

The Tigers came off a week in which they didn't play at all and began a new one in which they'll play three times in five days with a 62-48 win over Columbus in Southeast Kansas League play at the FSHS gymnasium.

Leading the way for the Tigers was sophomore Jolee Sharp, who scored 17 points on eight-of-13 field-goal shooting, grabbed 14 rebounds, dished four assists and was one of three players with three steals (Katelyn Simpson and Brittany Bingesser also had three steals each).

The Tigers (6-1 in the SEK, 7-4 overall) shot 50-percent from the floor as a team on 25 of 50 field-goal shooting (going 14 for 26 in the second half) and also outrebounded the Titans 35-23.

The 62 points were the most scored by the Tigers since winning at Independence, 60-56, last season. One has to go back to the 2004-05 season before finding the last time Fort Scott scored more -- 66 on two occasions that season, one of those times against Columbus.

It took a little time for the Tigers to shake off the rust from their inactive week. Columbus, meanwhile, played Saturday in the third-place game at the Southeast-Cherokee Lancer Classic and seemed to have some momentum early on as the Titans took an 8-5 lead 3 1/2 minutes into the contest.

But then Fort Scott got going as Sharp sparked an 11-0 run with a jumper and capped it with a three-point play.

Afton Gray's stickback of a teammate's miss boosted the Tigers' lead to 21-14 after one quarter.

Neither team scored a field goal in the last five minutes of the second period but the Tigers were able to go into the locker room with a 32-23 advantage after holding the Titans (3-5, 4-8) scoreless in the last 4:25.

It was still just a seven-point game before Gray hit three pointers to start and end an 8-0 run that made it 45-30 with 1:34 left in the third.

Down 47-34 going into the final stanza, Columbus made a game of it again briefly as it scored seven straight points early in the fourth to get within 49-41. Sharp scored a layup moments later and the Titans would never get within 10 points again.

Kori Page Rienbolt made five of eight shots from the floor as she finished with 12 points on the night while also dishing out three assists. Gray finished with 10 points for the Tigers.

Kayla DeRusse led Columbus with 17 points on seven-of-nine field-goal shooting. Cassie Stanley added 10 points.

The Titans, after going seven of 10 in the first quarter, finished the night 20 of 46 from the field for 43-percent field-goal shooting. They were also just five of 13 at the free-throw line.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- In a shortened game due to Columbus' lack of players, the Tigers took a 40-12 win after taking a 17-0 lead. Breianna Jones led Fort Scott with 12 points while Jamie Collins added seven.

FRESHMEN -- Columbus was unable to field a freshmen team, so the Tigers played the Uniontown junior varsity and won 42-35. Megan McDermed led Fort Scott with 14 points while Morgan Tourtillott added 13 and Kori Allen had 10 points and five rebounds. Katelyn Vincent led Uniontown with eight points while Jessi Camac had seven.

All of Fort Scott's teams play at Coffeyville (the Golden Tornado varsity is 2-5, 3-8) tonight before returning home Friday for Homecoming against Pittsburg.
