Blu-Jay boys only area winner

Friday, January 18, 2008

PLEASANTON -- Pleasanton's boys were the only winner among the six area basketball teams in Thursday's action at the Pleasanton Mid-Season Basketball Tornament here Thursday.

Blu-Jay boys were 58-48 winners over Linn County rival Jayhawk-Linn in the consolation bracket and will play Northeast-Arma for fifth place Saturday afternoon at 4:30 in the north gym.

Uniontown's boys fell to Humboldt in the championship semifinals, 61-37, and will take on Central Heights for third place in the south gym at 6 p.m. Saturday.

In other boys' games, Crest won the other championship semifinal, 55-21, over Central Heights and Northeast pounced Prairie View, 50-30, in the other consolation semifinal.

Jayhawk-Linn will face Prairie View for seventh place at 3 p.m. Saturday in the south gym. Humboldt and Crest will face off for the tournament title at 7:30 in the north gym.

In girls' play, Humboldt got by Uniontown, 46-41, and Central Heights beat Jayhawk-Linn, 36-27, in championship bracket games. Prairie View defeated Pleasanton, 42-28, and Crest bounced Northeast, 46-33, in the consolation semis.

Saturday's schedule has Pleasanton facing Northeast for seventh at 3 p.m. in the north gym, Prairie View and Crest playing for fifth at 4:30 in the south gym, Jayhawk-Linn against Uniontown for third at 7:30 in the south gym and Central Heights squaring off with Humboldt for the championship at 6 p.m. in the north gym.

Pleasanton boys 58, Jayhawk-Linn 48.

After a slow first half in which resulted in an 18-18 tie, the Blu-Jays (3-7) outscored Jayhawk-Linn in the second half, 40-30, to take the win.

Tyler Myrick led Pleasanton with 18 points. Jeff Fairbanks added 15 while T.J. Davis finished with 10.

Kris Bogan led Jayhawk-Linn (1-8) with 15 points. Clayton Dierkson added 11 and Dan Purinton scored 10.

Humboldt girls 46, Uniontown 41.

Humbolt's three-point shooting proved to be the difference as it was in Tuesday's first-round win over Pleasanton. The Cubs made four three-pointers -- two each by Kelci Owens, who led the way with 19 points -- and two by Lenzie Boring.

Abbie Smith led the Eagles (3-7) with 12 points. Jayme Shank and Katie Spainhoward each scored eight.

Spainhoward also had eight rebounds for Uniontown.

"I was very pleased with the effort we put out tonight," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "Owens and Boring hit some threes in the first half that really hurt. We went cold in the third quarter and couldn't get anything to fall.

"I know I keep saying it, but once again, we played better."

Humboldt led just 15-14 at halftime but outscored the Eagles 11-6 in the third period.

Central Heights girls 36, Jayhawk-Linn 27.

Elli Ouellette and Marissa Cox, who combined for 13 points in Tuesday's win over Crest, each had more than that in Thursday's semifinal and that was crucial on a night where points were difficult to come by.

Heights (4-4) led at the end of the first quarter, 5-3. And it was still just 11-11 at halftime.

But Cox scored 10 of her game-high 15 in the third period while Ouellette put in eigh of her 14 in the fourth to lead the Vikings into Saturday's finals.

Meriel Long and Kaylee Brownback each scored seven points for the Jayhawks (5-4) while Kylie Wilson had six. No other player in this game scored more than three points.

Jayhawk-Linn's statistic sheet had the Jayhawks down for nine-of-53 field-goal shooting (17 percent) and a nine-of-21 night at the free-throw line.

Humboldt boys 61, Uniontown 37.

Uniontown (5-5) trailed 13-5 after one period of play. Then the Cubs outscored the Eagles 24-11 in the second quarter.

Sam Noris paced the Cubs with 16 points while Zach Cole added 15 and Corey Henshall scored 13.

Jesse Johnston was the only Eagle to reach double figures as he scored 10 points.

Uniontown had just 10 field goals and made only half of its free throws on 16 of 32. Humboldt had 22 field goals and went 17 of 26 at the charity stripe.

Prairie View girls 42, Pleasanton 28.

Prairie View (2-8) led this game 10-2 after one period of play and never looked back as Jseeica Solo scored 17 points, the only player in double figures in this game.

Megan Allen led Pleasanton (1-9) with eight points.

Crest boys 55, Central Heights 21.

After scoring with ease in Tuesday night's first-round game with Pleasanton, Central Heights (4-5) had a great deal of difficulty on offense Thursday. Three players reached double figures for the Vikings against Pleasanton but only four scored at all -- none with more than six points (Adam Horstick) -- on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Brandon Newton led Crest (8-1) with 21 points while Todd Johnston added 15. Newton has scored 35 points in two tournament games.

Northeast boys 50, Prairie View 30.

Jordan Doherty led Northeast with 14 points while Todd Brennon added 12 and Danny Davied had 10.

Toby Cornejo, Mark Whitworth and Cody Phillips each scored seven points for Prairie View (3-7). Cornejo had four three-pointers and 22 points in Tuesday's victory over Uniontown but made just one three-pointer Thursday.

Crest girls 46, Northeast 33.

Four players scored in double figures for Crest, including Brittany Newton with 12 points, Tana Schooler with 11 and Kerry Stoneking and Becca Honn with 10 each.

Meanwhile, Rori Stephens was the only Viking who made it to double figures. She finished with 13 points.

The Lancers (2-7) held an 11-6 lead after one quarter and were up 16-10 at halftime.
